Size is relative
 

I wanted to start this because I have noticed alot of people very focused on that scale. On how much is their dog going to weigh when it grows up. No matter what size our yorkies are we love them and enjoy their companionship, and even a 15lb dog is really small.

I had a really fun experience meeting another really tiny yorkie when I took Maddie out yesterday. He was obviously a bit larger than Maddie, when his owner asked me how much she weighed she almost didn't believe me, Maddie weighs over 1/2lb more. When we held the others' baby I could tell that he was lighter and she commented on how solid Mad was. This was also the same for my boys. When I brought Rocky home I took both him and Copper to the vet Rocky was smaller, but weighed 6lbs Copper at the time weighed just a hair over 4lbs.

I think that the structure is what determines the size, none of us want a skinny or unhealthy pet. I hope that more people will start looking at parents and lines and structure to help determine size, and not focus so much on that number because really size is relative and weight is just one part of it. When people don't want a dog over a certain weight I just think that is silly.

I would love to know what other people think about this.

Size should not matter! Unless you are showing, or breeding.
Size is important, though, when you look at the risks and benefits! Like getting off the sofa, or quickly suffering hypoglycemia.
For the average pet owner, size should be the LAST concern!

You are absolutely right!!!!!!!!!!! I was telling everyone my Moka was 9-10 lbs. I took her in to the vet for her checkup and she was 7.5. I was shocked. But they told me she was perfect as far as her condition. Not to heavy, not to light. They actually told me that it was nice to see a dog in her condition as they see so many overweight, but they don't see many Yorkies around here, mostly large breeds. 7.5 or 10 or even more, I wouldn't have cared. I love her size.

:thumbup: I agree that it should be the last concern. I have noticed an increased fixation on size and weight lately. So many people are forgetting about those risks and the pros and cons of owning a smaller or larger dog. What about the temperment and health? what good is a tiny dog that is mean and sick all the time?

True! Lately people have been asking me how much does Cerise weigh when they see her. I tell them they say "WOW she is to tiny" (3.2lbs weighed last week at vet) But I still have to remind them that she is a PUPPY, not a full grown adult Yorkie :rolleyes: duh! I now know that most people are really clueless when it comes to small breeds :confused:

Moka is a doll:) It is amazing how deceiving that number can be. And I bet even if she was 10 lbs you would still have plenty of room on your lap for her, and could pack her anywhere you wanted.

My "Lil Teapot" is three times the weight his Mom was! :eek: :D But healthy, and STURDY!!! :p
My girls are all well within CanadianKC standards, and so too, are their puppy's. (With a few exceptions)
And NO my Lil teapot is NOT their stud! lol

I remember when we first got Sophie and took her to the vet we were told she would be around 10lbs. We were surprised only because her parents were both around 5lbs. But we didn't care if she would be "bigger" than most yorkies we loved her no matter what. She is now over a year old and weights 5.11 lbs. All I care is that she is healthy and happy.

This is my opinion also....who cares??!! I have met a lady thata Yorkie with a full tail....and when I asked her if her dog was a Yorkie she said "No, he has a tail!!" And then she looked at me as if I knew nothing??!!~~Duhhhh~~ lol

I put Puddie the Porker on the bathroom scale this morning, and it said 9.0 lbs. :eek:

Puddie the Porker has lost his waistline, so he could probably stand to lose a pound or so. But he's a very substantial little fellow, solid as a brick. His bones are strong and sturdy. You pick him up, and you KNOW you have something in your arms. And you're not so afraid of hurting him. He's a cotton coat, has a puppy cut, and looks like a little bear cub.

Bella is dainty. I guess she's probably around 3.5-4 pounds. But she feels fragile, insubstantial, all hair and kisses, especially next to Puddie.

Puddie takes flying leaps off the couch seat, and you don't worry about him. Bella prances all over the furniture, hills and valleys, until she gets to the stairs and traipses up and down.

When I first got them, I was a bit caught up in the "size" thing. But only for a few months. After that, I realized exactly how TINY they are. Even ol' Puddie the Porker ;).

I think maybe people who are all caught up in the size thing are new to Yorkies and just don't know any better. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. But personally, I could give a flyin' fig: they're adoreable, loving, and a totally captivating breed, and I love them with all my heart. They may not be absolutely perfect to someone else, but in my eyes they're the most beautiful little dogs in the whole, wide world. They both kept their puppy colors of black and tan (even though they came from different breeders), so they're my perpetual babies. And size doesn't matter a bit.

At least not in THIS instance :D ;)
