Yorkie Owner in County or Rural Areas Hi all -I just wanted to ask those of you who live in the county or in a rural area whether or not you walk your babies? And if so where? My dh and I are considering moving further into the county and I'm worried about where I'll be able to walk my boys. Let me know what you do or what your thoughts are please. |
Hello! :) I live on 3 acres of land, with 90 acres of farmland behind us. We have 1 neighbor directly next to us and that's it. It's not fenced so Jackson has a 50 foot leash I walk him with, but sometimes I let him go off leash. We've been practicing recall alot. I drive him 5 minutes up the road to a nice neighborhood to walk him. Now that it's been nicer, I've been doing it every day. We do about 30-35 minute walks. And then just drive 5 minutes back home. :) |
Kind of funny, 10 years ago, we moved from the country to the edge of town. Bevore we moved, we would drive into town (6 miles) to walk the bike path along the river. Now that we live on the edge of town, I enjoy walking into the country along the county roads. I do have to be careful though because of the stickers and weeds as my dogs seem to be magnets to that kind of thing. |
Well I thought about driving to a place that I could walk them, but we would be too far out, maybe about 10 minutes which doesn't sound so bad, but if I have to walk my two dogs separately that becomes time consuming... I have to walk them separetly because they go bullistic when they see another dog while on leash. I don't know why and I haven't been able to correct it. I don't know what I'll do.... I guess I'll have to wait and play it by ear. |
I live on 2.5 acres that I walk with them on a leash. I also walk them at our local state park that is about 5 minutes away. |

We live in the country also. Miles of country roads. Since it's been nice we've been walking out on the road with leash. Sat and Mon we went on a 3 mile walk and 4 mile walk. I've never seen the like with a furbutt. I had to keep up with her and I am a power walker. |
The place we're thinking of buying is about a little over 2 acres and ideally I'd love to fence in the whole yard, but that's not doable with the driveway so the back portion will have to do - still tons of room for them to run and play. But I'm nervous about walking them on a fairly busy county road. I guess I could go to the next road over that's less travelled. |
I live out in the sticks also. I walk Bonnie on a leash, right down the middle of the road (not very busy). When a car comes, we move to the side of the road. I say "Bonnie a car is coming" "Sit" and we wait til the car has gone past. Some days if it is not wet, we walk straight down the middle of our 25 acre pasture, and I let her run wild. Towards the end of the walk, I call her over and clip the leash to her harness. I don't trust her when we get too close to the house/road. |

we have 80 acres our house sits in the middle of 15acres fenced in both sides field fence and back so mine run on the 15 acres but not unsupervise. they have set their own boundaries and for some reason always stay in the front . I guess the answer to your question is I don't walk mine :) |
I live just outside the city limits, and live on a dead end street. I have a huge fenced in back yard that they can run off leash in, but I take turns walking them down the street on leash when it is pretty out. If a car comes by I get over off the road and pick them up. I am over protective I guess because I am a total wreck when they are in the yard. I will not let them out of my sight, and they are never walked off leash. |
