How do you all choose a name for your baby? I am picking up my new baby Fri afternoon and she doesn't have a name. I need some ideas please!!!???? :) Thank you :) |
maybe try to short list your favorites and then when you meet her you'll be able to decide which one suits her? heres a link: The Complete Girl Dog Names List... A Must-See Girl Dog Names Resource |
we've got a roman/greek god/goddess thing going...but we're big dorks :D |

OP- pick something you really like; TV show, food, smells, designer, you really can't go wrong. It's not like they will grow up and be teased by all the other pups in the playground. :p |
My children named most of ours, but I named Livi based on her registered name. Her full name is, Living My Dreams..."Livi". |
Another god nerd checking in! Some practical advice - a short name is easier for a dog to get, ideally one or two syllables. Also, it's good to have something that has a relatively unique sound, so your dog will be able to recognize it. I thought about naming Thor "March", but I decided he would hear it too much in other contexts and get confused. |
We chose Joey's name because the first Yorkie I ever got to spend much time at all with was named Joey, and he's the one that turned me on to the breed...and he just kinda looked like a Joey when we got him. With Tank, we thought it would be pretty awesome to have a tiny dog with a big boy name...especially since yorkies typically think they're bigger than they are, haha:D Their names ended up completely fitting them, except for the fact that Tank is SUPER shy...I still love it though! Our next dogs are gonna be bigger, and we've been thinking that we like the names like Zeus, Malachi, Apollo, etc... |
Thank you for the help. I'm still having trouble deciding on a name. I wanted something unique. I guess maybe I'll get her home and get to know her a bit before I find a name which suits her. I am looking for something cute as she will be a very small maltese-yorkie mix. We get her Friday :) |
Do you have an contenders yet? Give us your ideas and maybe we could help from there :) Congrats on getting your new baby! |
I pick the names by meanings or in memory. I use a site called BabyNamesWorld.com It is so cool because you can do an advanced search and put in the meaning you want and the names will come up, and you can also define your results in all sorts of ways... Like, if you want a certain first letter, last letter, letter within the name. When I originally found the name Roxanne, I loved it... but when Anna Nicole died right after I got Roxy, I decided to go with Roxanna Nicole. When I decided to get another dog, I did another search, and I narrowed it saying I wanted a girls name that contained the letter "x", well when I saw Alexis, I knew thats what I wanted, and I would call her Lexi. Plus, I always wanted to name my son Alex. So, thats how I got my names, meanings are very important to me. Roxanna is Persian and it means Dawn. Nicole is Greek and means Victorious. Alexis is Greek and it means Defender, Protector. I am still trying to find the perfect middle name for Little Miss Lexi. |
So it's a girl! Congratulations! :) I was wondering if you got a girl or boy from your other thread. Some people wait till they see the puppy and others (like me) new what their name would be ahead of time. I saw the name Kerri stiched on a bag earlier today and thought that it was a cute name for a girl Yorkie. |
Believe it or not, I think it was YT where I got Bella's name. I was doing some research on the breed and kept returning to YT for information. I saw "Bella" so many times that it rather stuck and I really liked it. I had no idea I would become a participating member of the forum at the time. We have 4 birds; Jasper and Fiona and also Pheonix and Ivy that were named from baby name sites. Our former miniature schnauzer was Brittny and our former sun conure was Mercedes. I think names are intensely personal and what I tend to like my sister doesn't. I agree with the other posters about finding a theme you like. Nature, colors, cars, favorite books and places are great starting points. As for the Greek theme, Bella was almost Athena... :) Good luck! |
Naming Tatum was easy.... it's the name that I wish I would have used for my now-13 year old daughter. I thought it was a little "too different" at the time that I had her so I didn't use it. Regretted it ever since. Made total sense for me to finally use it for my furbaby. If/when we ever get another one, I intend to use the other name I liked when having kids but chickened out of using.... Piper. |

May I ask if she is from the same breeder that you were asking about in the breeder section? That breeder breeds Maltese and Yorkies. If so I would now assume she mixes them too. |
When my grandson was about 3 yrs, he had a little cousin that couldn't say "Jacob"....it came out J Pop. I thought it was so cute so decided to name my first yorkie JPop. When we got #2, it took a while to name him, and finally decided on Taz (which does not fit him at all he's such a sweetie). #3 is Taz's son...so he's TJ (Taz Jr). #4 is my little teapot :pm tipping the scales at 14+ lbs that was given to me by my breeder cause she knew she'd be big and harder to sell. She's such a little angel, her name is Halo. Then came #5 ! DH was not happy! He's a military vehicle collector, so I told him we'd name him Deuce. He is definitely a little velcro pup when it comes to his daddy.:p Then there's #6; my little Tia. She was a rescue from a "breeder" and I use that term very loosely! She called her Teenie Tiny (which I didn't like at all), but Tia just fits her perfectly. Give your new baby a little time....you'll find the perfect name for her. :) |
