What I do know is that here in rural South MS, pit bulls are breed indiscrimately by the hundreds. Many of them are inbred, untrained, killing machines in the hands of very ignorant, uncaring owners. We have NO Animal control in our small town, except for the Sheriff and Police officers. Very little is done about abused and neglected dogs because we don't have the laws or the man power to do anything here.

The 2 dogs that killed Davinci were purchased by a young (20 ish) man that has a rapsheet a mile long and a history of jail time, for a very low amount of money (he doesn't have a job, so can't have much money). I'm sure that both were probably born in the poorest of living conditions to a mother that was probably abused and mistreated her whole life. They were bought as trophies to make him look "tough" with no thought given to training or proper care and control of the dogs. Putting the first one to sleep I'm sure did not even cause him to shed a tear, just like losing this one will not.

I believe that a nation wide law should be passed that requires a yearly license of $500 per pit bull dog, with a limit of one per person. I also believe that pitbulls should be required to be spayed or neutered before the age of 6 months or they should be confiscated from the owner. I also believe that show breeders that are then allowed to breed must complete rigourous home checks before a puppy can be placed with a family. While pit bulls are not the only dangerous dogs out there, I firmly believe that due to the fact that they breed and whelp so easily, often producing large litters, that serious controls must be put in place to try to help control the problems that these dogs are causing.

Just last month a 5 year old little girl was killed by a pitbull in Jackson MS when she went outside her home to play in the snow. Too many people and beloved family pets are losing their lives to this one breed. Something has to be done to ensure that they are not forced into extinction but owned by responsible people.

:thumbup::thumbup: Totally Agree ! So where do we start ?

I 100000% agree with you! And I'm so glad you're not blaming the whole Pit Bull breed. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss.

ranant12 03-08-2010 09:56 AM

I do plan to talk to our local Senator about some kind of law about pit bull ownership. My father in law is a Justice Court Judge, so I'm hoping that he can also help me. He loved Davinci also and even help my son bury him and said a prayer for him. He was very upset about what happened.

We all know something has to be done, but as a full time mother to 3 teenagers and a school teacher, my time is limited. However I do plan to do whatever I am able to in order to get our story out there. Hopefully something can be done to prevent pitbull attacks in the future.

simbasmom 03-08-2010 11:19 AM

I am so very sorry for your loss. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts.

Connie 03-08-2010 11:29 AM

I am so sorry for your tragic loss of your precious baby. My heart hurts for you and yours. I will pray for God to comfort all of you.

As for Pit Bulls, they are not allowed in our city and I'm glad of that. I know there are other large breeds that can be dangerous to our little ones, but I hear time and time again of dogs, children and adults being attacked by them.

I feel so utterly bad for you. Sending heartfelt sympathy.

MaxwellHouse 03-08-2010 11:31 AM

So very, very sorry for your loss and the horrible situation in your neighborhood.

pinkii726 03-08-2010 11:36 AM

That is so terrible and it should HAVE NEVER happened once, let alone twice!

I have had a lot of close calls with my neighbors dogs. I am so sorry!

We love you! Xoxo! from us! <3

YorkieRose 03-08-2010 11:37 AM

Good luck, you can help prevent this from happening to another family in your area...hoping your family has a better day today.

yorkiebebe 03-08-2010 11:46 AM

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm also glad you're taking legal action against these people. What a horrible thing, I can't imagine the pain of such an horrible act, and twice! The person who owns the dog should be locked up for a long time. Isn't there a law in the states against dogs that are not on a leash? In Norway where I'm originally from there is a law against dogs that are not on a leash. It is mandatory that all dogs be on a leash. My friend once kicked a big dog in the chest when it was trying to attack his little pug, and the owner of the big dog could not do anything about it beacause he knew that he had broken the law.

So sorry again. Hugs and prayers to you and your family.

I can't believe I have to tell this story. Some of you may remember that 2 years ago I lost Coco to a pitbull attack and now it has happened again. It has taken me this long to be able to post this story without crying hysterically.

On Friday, my 3 teenage children got out of school early so I allowed them to come home to do some chores and just hang out. I had a faculty meeting and had to stay late that day. They had only been home for about an hour when my 14 year old daughter called crying hysterically that Davinci was dead. Apparently they were do a few chores and had opened the back door to take out the trash. They did not notice that Davinci had gotten out. Within minutes they heard screaming and ran out the front door to see a strange pitbull shaking Davinci. My son screamed and ran at the dog startling it into letting Davinici go. The dog ran to our neighbors house. The same neighbors who's son brought the dog over that killed Coco 2 years ago. My girls were hysterical, but my son (age 16) took over and picked Davinci up. He was already gone. I rushed home, but at that point there was nothing I could do.

My husband is a Sheriff's deputy and he rushed home. We later found out that the dog was recently purchased by the neighbors son and he had brought it over the night before and he spent the night with his mom. These people are my husband's uncle's widow and son, but family or not he was furious. We called another officer to come out and take a report and talk to them. The son has been in and out of jail and my husband was so angry that I did not want him to confront the dude personally until he could calm down. The son gave the usual BS excuse that his dog was a "family dog" and had "never" shown aggression, etc. etc. Just Bulls**t!

I am going to the courthouse on Monday to file a suit against him and his mother. I'm tired of dealing with these ignorant people and tired of my family suffering for their stupidity.

My children are devastated, especially the 14 year old. I cannot seem to help her deal with this and am very concerned about how much she is grieving losing Davinci. I am going to consult our family physician tomorrow about her. All 3 feel guilty even though I have assured them that it was not their fault. Davinci loved being outside. We had no idea that the pitbull was even near our property. We had lived peacefully since the first incident, thinking that our only concern was the hawks that lived in our area.

I can't type anymore right now and just don't even know what to say anymore. Diva is grieving and my whole family is devastated by the loss of our little Davinci.

Hug your babies extra tight tonight.

When are simple people gonna realize that pitbulls cannot be owned by any moron. I don't blame the breed but the idiots that are not trained or educated to own this breed. I hope you sue the pants off of them and maybe they will learn they are not suitable dog owners. And i will go home and hug my Paris and i send my blessing to you and your family for your loss.

Weneebug 03-08-2010 11:54 AM

I am so sorry for what happened to your poor baby. I hope your family is able to heal quickly. Hugs!!

linda44 03-09-2010 03:46 AM

Again Im sorry for your loss, butt..............a suggestion, please dont take this wrong or that Im placing blame. If you get another dog someday, think about barrier gates. I have one of 7 that will dash out the door in a blink of an eye. We put up a dog fence and gate in the entry hall to the front door, and in our garage, my husband made a fence and gate across the width of garage so there is always an extra door to open. Even at that, when my grandkids come over I have to watch extra close. I only suggest this so that it may save you from heartbreak again, or someone else.

TaylorWoods 03-09-2010 04:03 AM

I am so terribly devastated to hear that news :(

You are in my prayers because I know how devastating it is to lose an animal in any manner. But this is not your fault in any way so don't punish yourself more than you are already suffering.

I will definitely give my little dog an extra tight hug tonight

cocoandmax 03-09-2010 04:40 AM

So sorry to hear this :( I feel terrible for you.

I agree something needs to be down. Over here there has been so many stories of dogs and small children being bitten or killed by such dogs. Just recently I had a terrifying experience where a pitbull ran towards me growling and barking and I managed to get away into my house quickly. I have grown up with all sorts of dogs but this was the first time I actually felt really scared by a dog. I felt it necessary to report this and luckilly I knew the address of the owner and dog. I just feel that these type of dogs should only be owned by very experienced people where they can be trained and not someone who thinks it makes them look hard!

I haven't taken my baby out yet (awaiting last shot) but I feel so scared to!

I am sorry for your loss of 2 dogs, and in the same manner. But please, I beg you to put up a fence and use a leash. I am not blaming you but this has to be a wake up call for you too so it never happens again.

In wa state where i live we have leash laws, and the pits should have been leashed as well as your own dog. If it wasn't the pit it could have been a car. Putting up a fence can be pricey yes, but worth it. And also use some gates at the doors so the dogs cannot dart out.

Your children are not just grieving the loss, they are haunted, it is a memory your 14 year old will never get out of her head. And to see this happen twice makes it even more traumatizing.

ranant12 03-09-2010 06:44 AM

Just to explain things a little clearer for some YTer's with questions. Our yard is fenced with hurricane fencing. However, we live at the end of a dead end road with only family members for neighbors. There is virtually no traffic on our road except us and my husband's Aunt and my In - laws. There are only 2 more house on the entire road almost a quarter of a mile away. Our fence gate was left open the day before when my husband was in and out feeding the pigs his uncle owned and working in the garden in the field next to us. We are surrounded on 3 sides by open fields used for raising cattle.

We had come to feel safe after 2 years of peace and quite. We often stayed in our yard (fenced front and open back) and down at the pond next to our house with no cause to be super cautious. Davinci LOVED following my husband and son down to the pond as they fished and was happiest when he could run crazy loops outside.

Should we have had the gate closed ......yes. Should the kids have been more careful........yes. Should we have anticipated that this idiot may be out of jail and may be stupid enough to get another pit bull.....maybe, although I not sure how to learn to see into the future.

The main things is our dogs should have been safe playing just 2 feet from our front steps (which is where Davinci was killed) without having to worry about getting killled by a pit bull. My children should be safe in our yard without wondering if the crazy dude next door is out of jail and MAY have brought another vicious dog over. We live deep in the country and should be able to enjoy the "country life" and the benefits of having wide open land around us.

No family should have to live in fear!! Period. We fenced our yard, we watch for hawks, we love our dogs and take excellent care of them. This was in no way our fault or my childrens. Responsiblity for this lays directly on the shoulders of an irresponsible pit bull "owner" if you can call him an owner.

I am installing baby gates at the foyer to the front door and the utility room door by the back door. I will continue to do all I can to keep my dogs and family safe. What I cannot do is prevent ignorant people from obtaining vicious dogs that they cannot control. When someone can help me figure that one out, PM me, cause I would love to know how to do it.

Thanks to all for your words of support. We needed them.

chattiesmom 03-09-2010 06:44 AM

I am so very sorry for both of your losses. I know you must be devestated to have had experienced this tragic loss twice. I, too live in a rural area - we have leash laws that require the breeds that are classified as "dangerous" be kept in a 6' fence and/or chained. I hope you persue legal action against the neighbors. It won't bring your precious Davinci back, but perhaps it will prevent someone else from suffering a similar loss.

I know how I felt when the neighbor's two pit mixes were attacking my miniature horses. We called animal control and what we found was that we were fully within our legal right to shoot the dogs if we or our property was in danger. To be honest, we would have shot the pits, however anytime my son had a clear bead on the dogs, the horses weren't in any immediate danger -- hence the delima. The owners did come and retrieve the pits and we haven't seen them again.

Thank you for sharing your tragedy with your YT family. I think we can all use this as a reminder to be more viligent with our little ones -- it seems like danger lurks everywhere -- whether it is a neighbor's dog that attacks, or a hawk, or a coyote.

ranant12 03-09-2010 06:55 AM

To Mommadog1

Perhaps you did not read the first post clearly. Davinci got outside unnoticed when the kids took out the trash. A leash would not have helped in anyway. We ALWAYS leash our dogs when we go anywhere other than our home.

The pitbull owner was a recently release ex con. Trust me he was not even thinking about leashing that dog. I doubt he even owned one, except maybe a "big ole chain" to chain him to the nearest tree.

As far as gates go, yes now I am installing them. I almost feel like I have to hire a body guard to protect my dogs now. Its ridiculous the steps we have to take to protect our family and dogs from ignorant people. But I will not blame myself or my children for what was tragic accident caused by a very ignorant irresponsible person.

ranant12 03-09-2010 07:03 AM

ChattiesMom,

Trust me I wanted to get a gun and get rid of that dog the minute I found out what had happened. But the dog had "disappeared" before we could confront them. The son hasn't been back since then either. The Aunt doesn't even own the house, but was being allowed to live there after my husband's uncle drowned tragically last summer. After this, she may be made to move. The family is really upset with her and her good for nothing son.

IF we had had some way of knowing he was there and had a dog like that I can assure you even my kids would not have gone home alone that day. (and my kids are 18,16 and 14)

I just keep thinking about the IF's from that day and just get madder and madder. I shouldn't have to "see into the future" to feel safe in my home.

I do hope that my story helps others. It's sad to know that you can't let your guard done even for a second, but I guess that's the world we live in now. Sad that things have come to this.

sassykd 03-27-2010 04:17 AM

I'm so very sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my prayers.
