Introducing a rescue to our yorkie Hi everyone! So we have had our dog Deegan for a little over two years and he is a really great dog. He is usually pretty good around other dogs, though every once and a while he snaps. For a while we have been talking about bringing another dog into our home. Well.....yesterday we went by a shelter and rescued an adorable pekingese/corgi mix(they aren't 100% sure on that of course) Her name is Ponyo. She is a 18 month- 2 year beautiful, sweet, healthy girl. :p She is very submissive, which we thought would be a compliment to Deegan. However, things have been pretty rocky the last day and half. I know it will take them a while to get acclimated, but Deegan is flipping out on her a lot! He just starts growling and lunges at her. She is really good about backing away most of the time, but sometimes she starts back at him, barking as well. It is really hard. I know that yorkies get very jealous, and I am sure that this is most of it, but I am just looking for any advice or suggestions that anyone can offer. I really don't want to take her back, and the shelter said to give it at least two weeks for them to get used to each other. Help!!!!!!!! |
The shelter was right but I had great success keeping them apart using x-pens for this time. I really think you need to start over and keep them separated. Also they need to keep separted for at least 10 days because your new dog could have a number of diseases and could easily pass them on to your boy. Not even nose touching.... |
Thanks for the advice- we are going to get her a crate today. She did just have a complete physical, was spayed, dewormed and is up to date on all shots. She had no physical or behavioral issues in her work up so I don't think that there is any way he can get sick- is there? Thanks for the help:) |
PS- at this point in time they won't even get close enough to each other to sniff noses either- Deegan will begin to growl and she backs off. I just really want it to work out. Thanks. |

They will get used to each other but I don't believe any rescue situation should be rushed because of health reasons and mental reasons for both dogs. Just take it easy...:) |
Thanks for your help! I will keep you posted.:) |
Please do and I think the dogs will eventually settle down...all of mine did but they are dogs and it is not always easy to figure out what the issues are. Hugs to you .... and can't wait to see pictures. |
