He thinks he's a guard dog!
 
Help! I just moved into a new apartment complex, and my furball FREAKS out whenever anyone else is in the hallway. He starts barking and trying to pull of his leash, and he won't stop going crazy. Even though he's only 5lbs, and not very scary (or scary at all for that matter), it's embarrassing, especially because his usual victim is this really nice elderly woman on my floor! :eek:

Could you perhaps go visit this nice elderly lady, so that he becomes familiar with her and won't bark at her in the future? You could ask her if she would help you with this. Maybe she wouldn't mind. Perhaps all he needs is more socialization. Maybe when you have friends come over you could arrange a hallway encounter with them to help train him not to bark at them. That is all I can think of to do, other than working with him and saying no or carrying a can of pennies to shake when he does this.:)

Mine does this as well!

I have to admit that it's my fault, we're always the ones responsible for our little one's behaviors, but it is quite embarrassing at times. I lived in a townhome during the first two crucial training years, so unless someone came to visit she never lost her marbles. In May of 2009 I moved into a midrise condo, and boy did her lack of training shine more brilliantly than ever before!

I'd love some advice on this as well. Although being a single girl it's nice to know when someone's near my front door, as this complex has several layers of security save for individual unit alarms. I don't care how safe your city is, there's always that chance!

Socialization is great advice, although I doubt her yorkie is targeting the 'elderly.' It's a territory issue, regardless of who it is mine barks like mad.

Thanks for the tips! I think having him actually interact with people in the hallway is a good idea (although I'm not sure my elderly neighbor wants to spend any extra time with my boy!). Letting him have a friendly interaction with someone in the hall though (preferably with treats ;) is a great idea though. I will try this this weekend!

I'm certain her yorkie isn't "targeting the elderly." The point of that suggestion was so that he wouldn't continue to bark at that particular lady. Of course, it is a territorial issue. He considers that hallway his territory, but you have to attack these problems in increments. There is no way it can be solved all at once.;)

I bet he will get used to the new surrounding soon, but it is a funny thing to picture in my mind!
