Will she ever get used to it? Does it ever get easier to leave them at the groomer and do they ever get used to it? Callie had a grooming appointment a 9am so we walked in and we went back to the grooming like room thing in petco and as soon as we got in the room she was standing up begging me to pick her up so I did and put her on my hip until the groomer checked us in and when I tried to set her on the counter to take her sweater and harness off it was near impossible and then she clung to me just griping with those paws. Oh my I almost cried its about the same everytime we take her to get groomed! I get the quick service so they do her and then call me and I come get her which only takes an hour or so and I go shop at the store right next door so I'm close when they call that shes ready. The women who grooms her always talks to her and calls her baby she just is so attached to me I guess, when I leave home to go somewhere she is never left alone always someone is babysitting her but she still just sleeps and does nothing else when I'm gone. Its just soooooo hard to leave her when shes not clinging to me that when she clings to me at the groomer its even worse leaving her. We try to do something fun for her when we pick her up like go to the other pet store and let her say hi to everyone and get her a millon toys. Today we even rode in a parking lot where there were geese because she likes to watch them. But when we get home she will not let me out of her site. Will she ever get used to going to the groomers? She will be 3 in May and has gone to a groomer sense she was a puppy. |
I don't know-I mean, Jackson does the same kind of thing. When we walk in the door, he tries to turn around and leave but once I pick him up, he's perfectly fine and wagging his tail and runs to me happily. So I know it doesn't traumatize him or anything but he doesn't particularly like it. I find he's better when I make it into no big deal. As hard as it is, don't nurture her or respond to her wanting you to pick her up because you are just rewarding her for being nervous, fearful or scared etc. I think if you were to walk in there with a nonchalant attitude and be calm and happy, she would probably be less clingy. |
Sophie Kate does that too and she loves her groomer. I think it is because she is attached to me and I am usually the one who drops her off. The groomer says once I leave Sophie Kate is fine and is giving out kisses pretty freely. |
I used to drag Milo to the groomers. I found a place that grooms that is also a doggie day care so he gets to play all day with the other dogs and I have them groom him at the end of the day when he is nice and relaxed. A much better experience all around. |
I think overtime it'll get ~somewhat~ better. Ariel has been going to the same groomer for almost a year now, and she always shys away from the store entrance. I have to pick her up to get her into the store, but once she's in, she's fine and running around. |
Bailey loves to go to the groomers - she loves the people and loves to see other dogs. But she loves coming home even more! :) |
I'm lucky in that I have a groomer for Reesie that will someday soon (I think) be my daughter's mother-in-law. She's great!! I can stand there and talk to Reesie, talk to Paula, and I know exactly how she handles the dogs. I posted a picture of her daycare group and also some of her own in a thread called 'A family Portrait'. I don't know that I like pet store groomers, it just doesn't seem to feel like a very personal atmosphere. Also, you never know if a dog that's been there has any problems that can be transmitted to your own. But Reesie still reacts the way she does when she gets taken to the vet, she trembles when she's nervous. Must be the smell of so many dogs. |
