What kind of id? Hi guys, I have been reading alot on YT trying to get ready for my puppy and it has been great. But I am a little concerned about something. I have read that a harness is the way to go instead of a collar, but that nothing should ever be left on the dog while it's unattended. That makes perfect sense but I am really worried about what might happen if the dog were to get out. I plan to have my puppy microchipped. Also I intend to make my dining room as secure as possible (I'm turning it into the puppy's room basically, baby gates and all) The puppy would spend any time I have to be away in there. But I live in an apartment complex and I have that worry that maintenance may come in and the puppy accidentally have gotten out, and it run out the door. Maybe I am being paranoid, but I am kinda freaking out about this. Is there anything else at all that I can do to make the situation a little more secure? Thanks! |
Maybe an xpen. But with the gate there it should be good enough. |
Well...if you aren't there and the puppy is gated in the dining room...is your door in the dining room? I wouldn't think you would have anything to worry about if maintenance came in. Can they actually come in anyway when you aren't home???? |
Try to teach your puppy the stay and come commands. I also live in apt bldg and for the same reason I live Gucci's tags on. I use a safety Cat collar, that if foior any reason it gets stuck it will come off. I dont attach the leach to the collar, is only for the tags(Id). Some my no agreed, but so far it has work for me. Im always home so if she gets stuck(God forbid) Im there. I know of some that keep the harnesses on all day and attach the Id's to it. Thats another possibility. Also you can have a gate to keep her away from doors. Good luck with your new puppy. |
I also use a cat safty collar on Yoda, he has his ID tags on it. We use a harness when going away from the house. :) |
No, my door is in the living room and the dining room is a couple of rooms away. Our maintenance comes in alot when we aren't here. We also have pest control and things like that dones at least once a month. Sometimes they let us know in advance, but others not. This is going to sound really weird, but I have a cockatiel and I can always tell when they have been in because when I get home he spends about an hour tweeting at me to tell me all about it. :) So I know for a fact that they sometimes come in and forget to mention it. Do x-pens have tops? I guess I am worried that the puppy would be able to climb the gate. My aunt had a fox terrier when I was a kid that would climb the fence in their yard and we are talking 3 or 4 feet tall. |
 Aside from ID and tag i don't really know what else thats all i have for my babies. They do try to be sneaking but i am usually by the door when they try to run out. They also are in their crate if not attended directly. |
what does a cat safety collar look like? do you have a picture? |
Dont maintainece have to give you notice before they come in? |
Sounds to me that you have done every thing you can. Just give the maintenance guys a call, let them know you have a puppy & to be extra careful when they come in your apt. Good Luck! Can't wait to see a picture! :) |
They have dog safety collars too at PetSmart but if the dog safety collars are to big then you can get a cat one. They look just like a normal nylon collar except they have a black clasp and if it gets caught on something it will come off right away. It says on the package that they are safety collars. My yorkie is microshipped but i also have a collar on her 24/7 with an id tag. I started leaving her collar on at 5 months and she hasn't had any problems. I have her main tags like Rabies and stuff only on her harness for when we go out because it gets to be a little much for her if i put all those tags on her collar. |
Thanks for the help guys! I appreciate the reassurance. I guess I am just getting nervous now that it's getting closer to time. I will definitely do training, but I am mainly thinking about when I'm not there. Because I will have the puppy glued to me when I am in the house. I will look into getting a breakaway collar and give them a heads up. hehehe Make sure they know just how obsessed I am. ;) |

:yelrotflm velcro dogs....hehehe That makes me think of the velcro walls you can jump on and stick for some reason. My bird is a hoot. Fidget is his name courtesy of my boyfriend, and thank heaven I don't have to worry about him escaping. I'm excited about the roof on the xpen! Total security for when maintenance invades. :happyboun |
