Welcome Welcome! I have a little girl who is 2.08lbs at 10 months. The vet has me leave her dry food out for her to graze all day long. This helps her maintain and gain weight. If you aren't already doing this I would try it. Just make sure that you read the thread on Food quality, I think it is under health and diet. This will let you know if you need to change to a better quality of food. I think the key to the little ones maintaining their weight and health is good quality food. |

I understand you may have taken heat last time for telling people who didn't know any better, but that doesn't mean that you can laugh at someone who is new. If you can't be nice, why do you even reply? In the future, I think it would save you some grief to either privately email the newbie the correct info, or to simply keep your mouth shut. I'm sorry for being blunt, but I did take offense to that comment. To the newbie: Hello and welcome to yorkietalk! I have learned a whole lot on this site, including the fact that there is no such thing as a "teacup" yorkie. There are teeny little ones, but the term "teacup" is just a marketing ploy for breeders to make more money. They come from the smallest, most fragile, and most often sickest yorkies out there. If you have any questions, you'll always find at least one good answer. Have a wonderful day :) |
Hi, and welcome to YT. I can't wait to see pictures of your little one!!!! I am kinda new to, but after awhile you will learn alot of these guys have been on here for a while.. and have inside jokes, myself, like you had/have no idea of this and it can make you feel pretty bad and dumb....However, I don't think thats the intent, they just tend to forget, they to had to start somewhere to get educated on such a unique breed....there are alot of breeders and just plain Yorkie Lovers on here that will help by giving opinions and sharing their experience. As you watch the post, you will see the connection between the members. Yes, as in real life, a persons personality comes out even through post and text.....So again I would like to say welcome, come on back and play, you will enjoy it...BTW my Joey was under 5lbs until he was a year old, now my little stinker is 9lbs at 14 months. I did change his food to Royal Canin skin and stone vet formula because she felt he was a little underweight due to feeling his backbone. No longer an issue,,HaHA Good Luck with your little one.....Sharon, Joey and Cabella |
Welcome to YT! I just got my first yorkie and she's 3lbs exactly at 6 months old. My vet told me she probably wouldn't get much bigger than that, but that she could stand to gain an extra 1/2lb. Just keep an eye on your baby as each dog is different, even within the same breed. A pound to a yorkie can be the equivalent of 20-30 lbs on a human! Like others have said, just make sure you're feeding her a high quality puppy food (I use Blue Buffalo). I am feeding mine three times a day in order to try and put that 1/2lb on her! I know a lot of people also do boiled chicken with a little bit of rice as well! Good luck! |
thank you for your support. I feel better. The warm welcome from everybody is overwhelming. Im looking forward to making lots of friends. |
wv~yorkies: after reading some other posts, I saw that you were probably just meaning to sit back and watch the debate of the term teacup, yes? I apologize, I mistook the context of your post. |
I was no way laughing at the OP. I was laughing at myself because what happened just a few pages ago. It was a big deal a few days ago when I said that I didn't mind people using teacup. I guess I should have explained... Most knew.. I have no problem with people using the word teacup..it is just a word to me and people get so bent out of shape about it. Atleast the heat was on me again and not the OP for using it like I have seen people do in the past...I can take it and will still laugh about it. I didn't say a word just laughed and have seen alot of threads and replys alot worse then this. Your damned if you do your damned if you don't... I think people need to lighten up just a little. You go to one thread and everyone agree's and turn around and post the exact same thing and get flamed for it... I could be mad but choose to laugh about it. To the OP: I am truly sorry you thought I was laughing at you. That really wasn't the case. |

Welcome to YorkieTalk achie74! :) |
yeah, like...when someone asks me if mine are teacup, I let them know that there's technically no such thing, but it doesn't make me angry when they use that word...honestly, it's only a word, nothing to get too worked up over. Life is too short to get angry over stupid stuff I think. Also, I think I read this post at the wrong time...I've had a rough night at work, haha. I just needed an attitude adjustment :) |

I took my Pinci(2.5lb@1yr) to Petco the other day and there was a lady with her son(little chubby). She was like " Oh my, how cute!!! I love teacup yorkies!" I looked at her son and said "How cute!!! Is he teapot?":D I wasn't trying to be mean, but it kind of makes me upset when people only look at my smaller baby. They are all precious no matter how big or small they are...:p |

I get the "is she a teacup" question alot. I usually say, "some people refer to them as THAT, but really there's no such thing". Then they will ask what I mean, and that gives me the opportunity to educate them on the breed standards. I don't find it offensive when people refer to Missy and Dora as teacups. Prior to YT, I didn't know any better myself! I definitely agree that no matter how big or small, they are all precious. Any dog under 2o lbs is considered small in my books! |

I love all sizes also my first yorkie was over 10 pounds and I got all the time he looks like a yorkie but to big or he must have some yorkie in him. Now that made me a little mad.:D Mine now range for 2 1/2 to 7 and every size inbetween. It is funny I get the teacup question as much on my 6 pound girl as I do on my 2 pound one..everyone assumes she is a puppy. I thought about naming my new girl teacup so when people asked I could honestly say Yes...:D |

I thought about naming my new girl teacup so when people asked I could honestly say Yes...:D :yelrotflmHa ha ha!!! How cute! I don't mind people who don't know asking me the "teacup" question, but there are some people who like smaller yorkies just for their sizes(hollywood type dog!) I just want people to love my 8lb Crust as much as they love my pinci. I swear, sometimes I can tell that Crusty gets jealous about people complimenting my 2 smaller babies. |
Re: TeaCups Hi My "Calleigh" was 2 lbs. for months and then went through a growth spurt after 6 months old and is now 4 lbs. My Patti, however, is very tiny and fragile. She eats more than Calleigh, but is only 3 lbs. Everyone is right, there is no such thing as a "Teacup". If I went to a breeder and they tried to sell me a "Teacup" I would leave. Yorkies are Yorkies and just like people - some are small, medium and large, etc. LB, Calleigh & Patti:aimeeyork |

At one time, I was uneducated about the term "teacup" because the term is used so much by certain "breeders" and pet shops, that most people believe that there are "teacup" Yorkies. It's great that forums like YorkieTalk exist, otherwise, people will continue to buy into the teacup propaganda. Additionally, I have a "teapot" (this is the first time I heard this) and when people see her, they ask if she is a Yorkie mix because she is "big" (this include Yorkie owners). I do get upset with that question because most people think that adult Yorkies are suppose to be 2lbs or 3lbs - and are unaware that the Yorkie standard is 7lbs. According to my vet, Chi-Chi will be 8-9lbs as a adult and just because she will be above the standard does not make her a mix. So, I can relate to the others that have Yorkies that are above the standard. |
"What bothers me is not the name but the price! You are getting the runt of the litter. I have seen some great breeders but if they have a super tiny , they charge like 3 times the regular price." Yep I am a new yorkie/ dog owner, I was not edjucated on this until I joined this forum and I bought Chloe (for me) and Bear (for my mom) And payed double the price of the other yorkies, As they were supposed to be "tea cups". Any how I feel like I should be in a group of some sort sort standing up saying "Hello my name is Chris and I bought into the tea cup scandal".lol:) |
LOL, very funny Chris. ;) The most important thing is that we have healthy, fun-loving and affectionate Yorkies! |
It took me until a while into page 3 before I knew what OP meant! :D As far as teacup, that's how some people know, kind of, what size you are talking about. Up until the ad that just got done running in our local paper, I always put teacup. For one reason, I too didn't know any better. Most of the time when you see Teacup, you know that it will be small -- so you don't waste a lot of time calling the other ads (if smaller is what you want). Now, I just put, won't be over 4 pounds when full grown. I love the Yorkie Talk site. When we sell a puppy, I now put one of the Yorkie Talk business cards with the papers, with one of our adult dogs name on it. That way, they too can learn and get educated. Education, and love of the breed is the most important! everything else is just not as important. |
My baby Sugar is going to be 13 months old, she's now around 2.5lbs- 3lbs, but around 4 months ago, she was merely 1.6lbs. I got very nervous when the vet told me I might need to wait for another 1 or 2 months to get her spayed, although Sugar is healthy, but the vet wanted to see Sugar gain some weight. I started to feed her more and more, so within 4 months, she became 2.5-3lbs :) |

It is so nice to see someone taking the time to be kind. Thank you |
no regrets At first i got offended about the whole op on teacup but on the brighter side it was education. I didnt realize how much warm greetings and concern there is, it is overwhelming. Thank you. I dont worry about it anymore. Its funny how this website educates you. Bella's mom is 4 lbs and dad is 5 lbs so i will be happy if she reaches their weight. I will try royal canine or blue buffalo but its a waste buying a bag and end up she doesnt like it. I guess i have to keep on trying. Tried homemade dog food. She will eat first then next time you serve it, she will totally ask for something else. Any recipe i can try? |

Another thing I suggest, so that you aren't buying bags of new foods. If you contact the company they will send you trial size packages of the foood. Also, if you do buy larger bags, you can take them back to where you purchased them and let them know that your pup didn't like them. I only realized this, after I took several opened unused bags to shelters. |
