New Pup Coming Home in 3 Weeks!! Okay, so I am going to pick up our new puppy in three weeks..she will be 12 weeks old. I have had a yorkie before, but it has been 10 years since I have had a puppy. I am going to buy a harness, crate and a dog carseat since it is a 4 hour ride to get home with her. Peepee pads are a must since there is snow on the ground. I will buy her whatever food the breeder is feeding her...and new bowls to eat/drink from. I have also heard that instead of gating her in our kitchen, that perhaps she would do better in the family room in an xpen with her crate and peepads in there so that it is a smaller area and we are in there most of the time. I read somewhere that she should sleep in her crate either in our bedroom with us or even in her crate on our bed...any suggestions. I am just getting so excited, I cannot wait to meet her. Let me know what you think about what I have said and and suggestions for getting ready. Thanks. :animal-pa |
Dont forget some toys for stimulation and fun! I would not put a crate on the bed.... I prefer to use an expen when they are small... this way they have access to food, water, and their pads all night... but you can do a crate as well, you just need to get up during the night at least once and let them out at the beginning. With a puppy that small a car harness may not work out... you may just want to look into a sherpa type bag that you can easily buckle into the seat... it will still be safe for the dog and probably much more comfortable. Get stainless steel or ceramic dishes...I learned the hard way that plastic can cause warts. :thumbdown Oh and one last thing.... CONGRATS!!!!:) |

I think you have the basis covered. Just make sure she has her own quiet area/den to relax whether it be a crate or an xpen. I have one in my living room. It has 1 pee pad in it, the food/water bowl, a bed and a crate with toys. During the day we leave it opened and at night the jump in and sleep with the door shut. Crate training is fine but should be introduced slowly. Some ppl put a small crate with a blanket and toy on the bed so they can get used to it. But make sure when buying a crate it is only big enough for them to stand and turn around otherwise they can pee/poo on one side and sleep on the other Other than that just make sure you keep her well hydrated and rested after play because their blood sugar can drop. Yea!! Exciting. I get my puppy in 3 weeks too! I'm glad you put your list up, it reminded me of an item I forgot to put on mine. What is with the plastic dishes and warts? I've never heard of that. Congrats... |
I have never heard of it either, but you can be sure I will not be buying plastic dishes...although my last yorkie never used plastic either. Good luck on getting your new pup...are you getting a girl or boy? :animal-pa |

I always suggest for the first night, a towel twisted, and then curled into a fairly small donut, to put in their bed or crate, to make the sleeping space "snug", helps them stay warm, and not miss their litter mates! It has been working for my pups, for years! Congratulations, and good luck! |
Thank you to everyone for your advice...it has been a long time since we have had a puppy here. I will be making a towel donut for snug sleeping and she will sleep in our bedbroom with us so she isn't so lonely. :animal-pa |
