does anyone else do this? Allie is 6 months & always ate whenever she wanted to, but everything. i read says to keep them on a schedule so you can anticipate poops, so i recently began at 6 am and 6 pm giving her the food with 4-5 pieces of peanut butter captain crunch cereal crushed up and she gobbles it all up, am i doing wrong ? I swear i worry about her as much or even more than my kids !!! |
Everyone has different opinions on that one. I have 3 yorkies and I free feed mine. Whether it is right or wrong that is what I do. They are a little over 1 yr. old. I would do what I felt was right for your baby, unless there is a weight issue. |
Oh, I forget to say welcome to YT:) |
Wecome to YT. I have open bowl. She is three years old and so far does not have a weight problem. Do what you feel is best for your fur baby. |
Kimbo eats @ 7AM 12PM and 6PM. He's not very big at all, but would eat his weight in food if I free fed. Free feeding would be easier, but it's just not an option for my little piggy. |
i feed a small tidbit (like two tablespoons) in the morning then about a 1/4 of a cup in the afternoon and 1/4 of a cup in the evening this keeps them satisfied and they don't over eat Gatsby has not had a weight problem since i started home cooking by the way Gatsby is 6 pounds you would have to adjust for your dogs weight |
I've always free fed my dogs who've eaten kibble, none had weight issues. I homecook for my yorkiegirls though, so they do get fed twice a day (and still I leave kibble out always). |

Is the cereal what you are worried about? An occasional piece might not be bad, but for day to day treats, I would look for something a little more nutritional. You can find peanut butter flavored healthy dog treats. Maybe someone could recommend one:) Are you wanting to schedule her feeding cause you are having trouble potty training? If so, that would be a good thing to try. But, if you are not having trouble in that area, or with weight, I would leave the food out and free feed, especially when they are so young. |
The vet has us feeding SweetPea 4 times a day. Small portions. She is 4lbs 3ounces and is 1yr old. |
We free feed Darwin but he gets walked quite a lot during the day so training has been pretty easy for us. He has been very clean in our home for quite a few months now. I also think we were trained before he was to remember to take him out frequently until he connected the dots. Saved a lot of cleaning!:) |
I keep a bowl of dry food (Science Diet) all day for Jasper, science diet. I also give him a small portion of canned food (Cesar) once a day, usually mid-afternoon. He's up to about half a can of the can food. I've noticed, though, even tho the food is down all day, he's pretty much started making a schedule for himself (I think he knows when he gets the can food), so he's becoming pretty predictable even with the free food there for him. :D |
I free feed mine always |
We free feed, and walk every 2 hours. If you want to control pooping, I've heard scheduling is better. |
At 6 mos I think vet told us we should have been feeding 3 -4 times a day. We didn't have a weight issue, just the opposite. lol It took forever for Hot Rod to put any weight on and he's definitely caught up now. They both get fed 2x a day now and sometimes I will give them some yogurt or cottage cheese as a treat. |
I leave kibble out all day for Jackson. He's not a big eater so he nibbles here and there. If I notice he hasn't really eaten much kibble during the day, I give him his dinner around 6pm and it's just dry food mixed with wet food and he gobbles it up. |
