How to handle a scared yorkie? What do you do when your dog is really scared. Capone is afraid of everything. But lately it seems to be getting worst and I feel like its really stressing him out. If he hears a loud noise he will start uncontrolably shaking and try to hide. It's little things like drilling a hole in the wall or the dishwasher and he freaks out and shivers and hides and won't come to me. What is the right way to work on this problem? What I do know is pick him up and craddle him and spoil him until he stops shaking, but I don't know if thats the right thing to do, any suggestions. |
I had a scared one! Castor Pollux was weird about noise because his breeder was awesome and he was "raised" in impecable conditions and even had some dog calming music to drown out and undesirable noises. To break him from that (because I live in the real world) when something would make a noise i'd go sit beside it. Castor Pollux would want to be with me and that meant being beside the scary noise thing. So dishwasher? go sit beside it, he'll come to you, smell out your dish washer and that won't bother him. No so much with the drill... that is dangerous. but other things... yeah, make him come to you-- and if he isn't coming to you lure him with a treat. I Wouldn't just pick him up and put him in a scary place, but lure him and let him see that its fine |
Bless his heart :( I'm not really sure of how you can break this....maybe try giving him a massage and once he's relaxed and calm, then bring on the noise. Not that you want to startle him, but maybe if he's in a calm state, he won't get so worked up...not really sure. I never experienced this with Harley, but I gradually introduced things to her and let her discover them on her own, never forcing anything upon her. I could be wrong, but I do not believe picking him up and coddling him is the correct way to break him of this. I've heard that this can actually re-enforce the bad behaviour. In your mind, you want to protect and make him feel secure, but in his mind by picking him up you're confirming that the noise is something to worry about. Hope that makes sense? |

I know some Yorkies are afraid of everything. It sounds like Capone may be one of them. Perhaps the noises in the house that you know will upset him you can handle like this. When you turn on the dishwasher be prepared to give him his favorite treat. Whenever you know a noise will disturb him be prepared to reward him with something he likes. In time he may just connect the noise as good because he's getting a treat. Just a suggestion. When a dog is stressed for whatever reason we have to figure out a way to make a negative a positive in their minds. I hope this helps you. |

Thanks everyone! I think you all are right. He's always been a very cautious dog, but lately it's been really crazy. Thanks for all the suggestions , I will try them. |

:thumbup::thumbup: I agree and that is what I've been doing! I can see it is working for Cerise. |
Hot Rod seems to act like this alot. I usually try to say to him "it's okay" and it works for a while. He will come towards me or the object. I made the mistake when he was little and put him outside in the sunroom when I vacuumed so he wouldn't be afraid of the vaccum. Well, the opposite happened, he's terrifyed of it and now he starts barking at it as soon as I start rolling it across the floor. For a time, I was laying treats on the base so he would go up and sniff it and take the treats--worked but he still doesnt' like it. lol And when he was little, I also made the mistake of rolling the trash can in when I had him on the lease...to this day he barks and walks clear across the driveway from the trash can, lol. I've told him that it's okay and he's actually gone up to it close enough to sniff it but then run away quickly. But he does respond when I say that it's okay. It's worked on littler things. Good luck. :) |
Reesie gets scared when we get in the car. I've been working with him on this. He starts shaking before we even leave the house. What I've been doing is talking to him in a normal voice and say "No Reesie", or "It's okay". I'm not using a high pitched puppy voice, just a regular voice. I think when I was saying "Oh, it's okay!" in the puppy voice it was making it worse. Like there was something to be afraid of. Now that I've been telling him "No", he knows he is not suppose to be afraid and I think it's working. Hope this helps!:) |
