Pet Insurance (VPI) Does anyone out there have VPI pet insurance? I have held a policy with VPI for two years now for my Yorkie. Thankfully, I've only had to use it for routine care. However, my girlfriend also has a policy with VPI and recently did have to use it. Her dog (a lab mix) got into a bottle of prescription medication. She took the dog to the emergency vet clinic. Dog was fine, but the bill was about $2,000. When she submitted the claim to VPI, she only received back $400!!! We were shocked to find out that VPI only reimbursed a mere 20 percent for this incident. It doesn't make the health insurance seem even remotely worthwhile, especially since the premiums are upwards of $30/month. Has anyone cancelled insurance with VPI for this reason? I'd like to receive any feedback possible regarding VPI and their practices. It seems like a money-making scam to me. Thanks, |

That doesn't seem right to me! I have VPI for both of my dogs and they have always paid about 80% of visits, emergency or not. Simon had surgery last December and they reimbursed me all except $300, way over $1000 dollars! Did she call them and ask why? Does it depend on the policy you have? I know they have a few options so maybe that is why. |

Thanks for the response. That's encouraging. She did call VPI. They stated that their fee schedule pays for 90 percent of whatever the national average for a particular procedure. We do live in the DC/Metro area which is always going to be more expesive than the national average of anything, but still. However, she also stated that she has the lowest level of insurance (she pays $15/month). However, I have the premium plan (with the cancer rider and preventative benefit) and have not been particularly encouraged at what I've been reimbursed for vet visits. Again, this could be the result of living in a very expensive area. I am going to get my policy out and take a closer look at the fee schedule. Thanks, Andrea |

Hi Andrea, I bought a VPI policy for my little girl. I recently cancelled the policy. They are VERY VERY slow to process the claims and they pay VERY little- actually their reimbursements are a joke!! You are better off setting aside the 20 or 30 dollars a month into a savings account. Kris, Lexie's mommy |

I just submitted 1500.00 in charges for Cali's 4 ER visits last week, but they puy hypoglcemia and possible liver shunt for 3 of them and those are ridered out of Cali's policy so I don't expect to get much back. I will let evryone know what I get back if anything. How long does it take to get a claim paid? |
