Is yorkie right for us?? Help! Hi, So glad I found this site. We've been investigating getting a new member to our family! I have been told that Yorkies and Shih Tzu's are great dogs. I would ideally like a small puppy that will stay fairly small. One that is easy to train and isn't "yappy". I don't mean to sound rigid or too picky, I just want this to be a super experience for us, especially our daughter! Does anyone have any advice on Yorkies relating to the above thoughts?? I just got my first Yorkie 2 weeks ago and so far it is amazing! My husband was against a dog in the house for years but I finally nagged him into it. We even named her Pita cuz he thought for sure she'd be a "Pain In The Ass!" But I am thrilled. I do suggest not buying the first one you see. We saw quite a few that were supposed to be 4-5 pounds full grown that weighed 3 pounds + at 8weeks!! Also if you want a quiet dog, look for one that isn't already yapping at you when you go look at them, Pita was super quiet even when everyone else was yapping and so far she still is. Like I said I'm no expert but I am having a great Yorkie experience!!! Good Luck!! Jennifer |
I guess a lot of it is down to personal experience and preference. When we went to get a Yorkie a lot of people told me he'd been yapping all the time! But he never yapped at all. My baby would bark at certain things like the postman, people coming home and strangers, they're quite protective, but he never just yapped or whined for no reason. I also found that he was great with kids and was never agressive when we had visitors. At first he'd be a little weary but once he saw that we were friends with the visitors then he'd calm down too. Our Bubbles also stayed quite small. He was what they call a 'toy' Yorkie and was always neat enough to curl up on our laps. My younger cousin adored him because he was small enough to sit next to her unlike her larger dog. I think Yorkie's make great family pets, they're very loyal and loving. :) |
That is to funny. My husband did not want a small dog. And for years I have been trying to change his mind. He could not see spending so much money on somthing so little (what he would call a rat). Then finally I convinced him of getting a Yorkie. Now he absolutly loves her. He said that was the best money we ever spent (and he is very tight with money). He would not change her for the world. She fits in perfectly in our family. And now we are looking into getting another Yorkie real soon (we have to find a breeder). I would definetly look for puppies that were bred for temperment. Make sure you take a good look at the parents personality to. As far as training it depends on what type of training you are talking about. If you mean tricks like sit, stay, roll over, give paw and play dead that can be done easily and fairly quickly (Amber learns her tricks in 15 minutes and does not forget them). Yorkies are very smart dogs but also can be stubborn. As far as housebreaking that took alot longer to do. My female is 7 months old and I can finally say she is housebroken. Yea :D ! |
