Why would a breeder give AKC papers on a pup only after he is nuetered? Just wondering.....

My guess is so that you can't/won't want to breed the dog because it you wouldn't be able to register the pups without the father being registered.

I do the same! Once I have prove of spay/neuter, I will mail AKC papers. It is to help ensure NO breeding is done. I also have a spay/neuter contract as well. Most reputable breeders do this practice.:)

Yay, you found a good breeder, she understands that not every dog should be bred, and not everyone knows enough to be a good breeder. I recommend that everyone find a breeder who sells on limited registration, those who are planning to breed, need to start slowly, and find a mentor.

You could, but you wouldn't be able to register the puppies with the AKC because you wouldn't have registration for the father.

Most people when looking for purebred dogs will want AKC registration, especially if paying a lot of a puppy.

Also most people with a female dog will want a male that has AKC registration...

Because experienced breeders understand that it takes lots of time and study to breed properly. Once we domesticate an animal, we become very involved in it's breeding, and we should take this responsibility very seriously. I'm sorry - I must be incredibly dense....lol.....if my little girl is registered, wait, I don't know what I am trying to say.....I am getting a little boy on Tuesday. I also have a little girl. If I want to have baby pups later, I am not allowed??? Is it just because the breeder doesn't want to compete?

Am I asking this right??

No it isn't because the breeder doesn't want to compete, at least not for most of them, it's because some feel responsible for all the pups their dogs produce forever!

No, you could.

If they are both registered with the AKC you could then have the puppies registered with the AKC. If only one is registered with the AKC then you can't.

Most people, I would think, when buying a purebred dog and spending money on a puppy are going to want AKC registration.

With AKC registration you know that the dog is purebred and will know their lineage. This way if you dog happens to have health problems you are able to go back to the parents, grandparents, etc to see if they also had certain issues or try to see if it is genetic.

I know me personally, if I was to ever buy a dog again, I would not ever get one without AKC registration.

If you are breeding dogs and don't have AKC registration (there are even some that do) it just screams back yard breeder to me.

So, yes you could breed two unregistered dogs, if that is what you are asking.

That is the problem, I can't get the AKC registration unless I have him neutered.

That means that you have found a FANTASTIC breeder who truly cares about the puppies she sends to new homes.

It sounds like you have found a puppy that comes from a good home and will love to spend the rest of their life as a lap dog in your home!

As stated before, breeding, especially with small breeds, is not something to be taken lightly. It would be in your best interest and that of your dog to get him fixed. Not only that but I bet it will save your furniture in your house with no marking :)
