Question about harnesses Right now Samson wears a collar and I use a leash when I take him out. Reading everything about collars vs. harnesses I have a question. How do you get the harness on quickly so that your little one doesn't pee before you are able to get it on and get them outside? Like in the morning, Samson has to go as soon as he gets up (and he's a squirmer) so I don't think he would hold it long enough for me to get a harness on him. |
1 Attachment(s) I have the harness dresses for Pita, they are just 2 velcro tabs, they go on very fast! Barkindogclothes.com makes them, as do most of the other pet clothes sites. I don't have a problem with Pita breaking thro them, the worst thing is sometimes her hair gets caught in the velcro and she hates it when I have to take it off. |
I am wondering, though, since she's just running him out to potty, is it not OK just to quickly put on his collar? I have a fenced yard and have never been faced with this problem, so I have only used harnesses on my doggies. Perhaps someone with more expertise than I could answer this question. :) |
This is just my opinion for whatever it is worth. I dont see anything wrong with using a collar when you are taking him outside to go to the bathroom. I would use a harness when you are taking him for a walk. I just dont see anything wrong with using collars for short peeriods. |
I use a step in harness when I walk them. When they go outside to pee they are in the fenced in yard so I don't have anything on them. |

Thats why I like either step in collars or built in harness on clothes/vest. I only use the nylon harnesses on my boxer when I walk her. My little ones normally just run around in the backyard but if I am going to put them on a leash I use my harnesses that I make because they are easier to put on and take off. |
Princess has very pretty collars, but they don't have a leads. I olny let her wear them sometimes because they are so pretty. If I was to use a lead on her, she has to have a harness. I was told they are better, so thats what she has for walks. :) |

I wondered about this dilema myself when I first got Millie. We did not have a fenced in yard and I did not want her to run away, especially in the middle of night when I could not see her. So my solution was to put her in pajamas that I had barkingdogs.com make. they were the basic t-shirt style in t-shirt material and I had her put a leash hook on the shirts. Every night before bed time, I put Millie's jammies on and in the middle of the night or early in the morning all I had to do was clip the leash on the hook in the jammies. During the day, I kept her in her harness. |
I have always used a harness for my pup! I know what you mean about the morning though. Sometimes I try to leave the harness on when we go to bed, or I leave it right on my nightstand to quickly slip on in the morning. The step-in harnesses are really really easy! Much easier then the ones that slip over the heads. The step-in harnesses can be found at PetSmart, I have yet to see them at Petco. I have also ordered some online. I am unable to use a collar on Laila (long story for later!), so each harness has a personalized tag on it. I really recommend this for anyone who is unable to use a collar. Even w/ a collar, you should really try to use the harness when using a leash. Yorkies have sensitive trachea's and harnesses can help avoid any problems. Back to the morning harness thing - Laila has gotten use to the harness, and knows she gets to go outside for a long walk in the morning when she see's me go get it. She puts her paws up, harness on & out the door. If you work on a routine, they will eventually get used to it! Good Luck! |
