Coccidia?? For the past 3 or so days, Rocco has been having diarrhea--loose, watery stool mixed with semi-soft stool. We took in a stool sample to the vet today and also had him checked. The only thing that came up was a coccidia oocyte (coccidia egg, i believe)...and so Rocco was prescribed Flagyl and Albon. Does anyone know much about this protozoa parasite?? I thought that maybe Rocco had giardia (which i think is similar to coccidia) and had never even heard of coccidia. I asked my vet and she said that he had probably always had it. Or that he treaded on contaminated ground and later licked his paws, etc. That is definitely possible, because it seems that most of the tenants at our apartment complex never pick up after their pets  However, i always try to clean Bella and Rocco up when we come in from our walks. Anyway sorry this is so long but I'm just upset that Rocco has this thing, I just want my baby to stop having diarrhea and to feel better, and most of all, to find out how i can prevent him and Bella from contracting it. TIA. |
If you share common grounds for the guys to potty, I'm not sure you can prevent it from happening again. You should alert the other animal owners as to the situation and hopefully they will also have their animals checked. As you stated they can carry it and not show symptoms so they may feel, well mine are not sick and not have them checked. So your dogs run the risk again. Is indoor potty training a possibilty. If you have a deck you could try one of the artifical grass boxes. My guys don't really care for it though. So 30.00 down the drain. Good Luck and hope little one feels better soon. Hey just thought of this, but check with your vet first. What if you put GermX on their paws when you come inside? They may lick at it and I wouldn't want them to get sick from that. Just a thought. |
Thank you, joeys mom. Bella is paper trained and goes on the pads, but she still likes her daily walks. I will just try to keep her from going in the grass from now on, same with Rocco. I always try to avoid any contact with other fecal matter out there but it's hard--both my babies seem to like smelling others' poop :confused: At any rate, Rocco is also in the process of being paper trained, and is at the point where he'd much prefer to go indoors on the pad than out. As far as germ-x is concerned, i haven't thought about that but with the chemicals in it i don't know if that would be a good idea. i usually use baby wipes of some sort on their paws. thanks for the suggestions and for replying :) |
