Need Advice-Possible New Yorkie My husband, Addie, Mia and I went to visit a yorkie at our local humane society last night (Amanda). Amanda is 7 years old (Addie and Mia will be 2 years in April), probably came from a puppy mill or backyard breeder situation, is timid, but "bossy" as the humane society put it. I'm worried that if we adopt Amanda, her older years will cause some friction as Addie is the alpha at home. Amanda did growl at Addie, but once Addie was off leash that quieted down. I know they have to work things out, as did Addie and Mia when I first brought Mia home. I feel I'm not explaining it right. I (and DH) want to adopt Amanda, but I'm really worried that Addie and Mia won't feel so loved. Amanda is going to take up a lot of time, she's not the least bit housetrained and still a bit timid, although she was fine with the shelter folks, so I'm guessing once she knows you, you're okay in her book. She did seem to like hubby a bit more than me, which I think is a good thing since Addie and Mia both require my attention more than they require his. Any thoughts? |
I would visit the shelter a few times with all the family members to see how things go. Good luck! I hope things work out and you get a new member to add to your house. |

All four of us are going to go look at her again tomorrow. I though last night that too many people were around so all three dogs felt overwhelmed. I'll see if they can't leave the five of us alone for a bit to see how she reacts to all of us then. We were talking about how she looks earlier today, and we think she may actually be a silky terrier, not a yorkshire terrier. She would be a small silky though, she's only five pounds now, although she could use an extra half to one pound more based on how her ribcage felt. Addie has a soft coat, but Amanda's was "silkier" feeling. She also has a longer nose and her head isn't shaped the same way. She's adorable, I wish I had remembered to take a picture of her. I'm really hoping they get along and Addie and Mia still feel loved if we bring Amanda home. |
I think it is very important how the dog is with you and your husband. From my experience NO yorkie wants anymore into the house but they do adjust very well but it can take time. Yorkie ladies can be very bitchy and my only concern would be to what extent is she bitchy...My girls are always telling me what to do...haha. The boys do tend to play together more than the girls but my gang (all rescued) have learned to get along very well. |
I think that going a few more times will help you decide. Does he shelter do home interactions where they bring the dog to your house? I just brought in a 13 year old male a few days ago and my Roxie who is 2 has gone after him a few times but I am pretty sure they will work it out. It just takes time for them to figure out their places. I hope it works out. |
I'll have to ask about the home visit. They didn't mention it, so not sure if they do it. Addie was here for three months before we brought Mia home. They had some disagreements, but ended up working it out. Now they don't like it if I have to separate them for any reason (like bath time). Addie is the boss here too-lol, so I'm pretty sure she'll try to keep the throne if we do take Amanda home. :) I also figure that if we do adopt her, she'll have a small area to herself while we're gone. Especially given that she has no housetraining at all. In fact, when we were there last night, she peed on one of the rugs. They also have a time period where you can return an adopted dog if it doesn't work out. Worse case scenario for us, so if I'm not sure we should adopt her, we won't. |
New Addition! So we went to look at Amanda (yorkie-mix or silkie?) again on Saturday at the humane society. She perked up right away when she saw the four of us and never once growled at Addie and Mia. We took her home and she fits in like part of the family. There's been no fighting whatsoever. I'm simply amazed! Amanda (now Dany) is 7 years old, possibly came from a puppy mill or backyard breeder. She is underweight, but we're working on that. She seems uncertain about grass and snow, like she's not sure she should walk on it and she is not housetrained in the least. We're working on that too. :) Dany is an absolute doll, just like Addie and Mia. Addie (who I was most worried about) doesn't mind at all that there's someone else living at home. I'm thrilled to add her to the family! |

im so excited for you and it might be good that this dog likes your DH more..try to help that bond between them let him feed her while you feed the other two that way mia and addie still feel your love and dany gets the attention she needs right now bless your yorkie loving heart for not only adopting but adopting an elder dog. |
Thanks everyone! I'm so glad to give her the home she deserves. DH is the one doing the training and feeding of Dany. I explained to him that we should have her more bonded to him than me because it would make the transition easier for Addie and Mia. I'm the one who did their feeding and training. I've showed him the ropes so to speak and then sent him on his way. He has been wonderful with it, I think Dany and my DH had an instant connection at the shelter. :D |

Introducing Dany! I have pictures up of Dany! There's also one with Addie, Mia and Dany. Does anyone have an opinion - is Dany a yorkie or yorkie mix? Not sure you can really tell from the pictures. She does have quite the schnoz for a yorkie. :) How anyone could treat her the way they did, I don't know. We also suspect that she has been debarked. We are going to ask the vet when we bring her in next week. Her barks (which happen rarely) are raspy and soft. The Humane Society had given her the bordatella shot, so I don't think she has kennel cough. The additional love and joy she brings to our family is amazing. She grows more confident each day. She's learning to relax into our hands when we pet and massage her, to enjoy laps and soft beds, and to know that treats are tasty! |

At first, Kaji sounded raspy when barking, almost like he was debarked (silly thought I know since his breeder is from YT). He was just shy and a few months later he has a German shepherd bark! Seriously. He rarely ever barks but when he does I can't believe how big his bark is for such a little body! Your Dany might just be needing to adjust, but I'm sure your vet will confirm it either way. Congrats on your new little girl! |
