Yorkie ears I know this has been brought up on this forum many many times, but I have just a quick questions about yorkie ears. I got my yorkie about a week ago and she is now 13 weeks. At 12 weeks when I got her her ears were semi/ mostly floppy and I read online about taping them for a week or so. Well I taped them on Tuesday night and I just couldn't wait a week to see if it worked, not to mention my little puppy was scratching at her ears constantly trying to get off the evil tape. :p So I just took it off and her ears are standing! But they still appear to be very flimsy and sometimes droop a little. Is this normal? Should I tape them back up again or will they continue to "grow in" the right way from now on since they are standing? |
rule of thumb is to shave about about half down...tape the ears for 3 days...make sure that it is taped straight up not sideways....then remove the tape...if it is standing let it stand...if it goes back down...you tape it again for 1 day...remove it...and repeat...until it stands on its own....remember that ears will go up and down when the puppy is teething....also some ears may never go up due to the size and how thick the leather is on the ears....hope that helps |
shaving helps a lot. i recommend using wahl clippers for pets. you can find some at walmart. let us know the results:) |
Our ears were up perfect-see our profile pic-but yesterday one went floppy! It is just like some one just deflated her poor little ear! I think it is due to teething though. Bristol will be 4 months tomorrow. |
Fiona's breeder would shave her ears and rub them, however, she has floppy ears, and only stands them up when she wants them to! |
I never taped Pixie ears. She is 17 months old and they stood up on their own. But, from time to time one ear does flop. |
Neutered Do they flop when they get fixed. I just got Shockey fixed last week and ever since his right ear has been floppy . Before then they had both been standing strait since he was 4 months old. He's sixth months now. |

about what age do they go up? My pups are 5 wks when should I see them go up or when do I shave them? |
they could go up anytime from 6 weeks up to a year....a lot has influence on it....shaving the hair off the ear completely may help it go up....depending on how thick, big and heavy the ears are....if shaving it alone doesn't do it then you would have to tape it....here is a link to help you Jon-An's Yorkshire Terriers (How to train Yorkies ears to stand) |
Morgan is only half Yorkie, but her ears went up a little after we got her. They always stand straight up now - unless she's overly excited and then they go back flat against her head. |
I taped Leilah's ears at 10 weeks. She had the tape on for 2 days before ripping them off but when she did they were standing beautifully! A couple days later her left ear began to droop so I taped it overnight and by the morning she ripped it off and it was standing again. I had to repeat this a few days later but now at 12 weeks they are standing pretty. I only taped the one ear when it drooped and I massage them every night. I just press them shut and rub them from the base to the tip between by thumb and forefinger. This seems to work especially well with that stubborn ear! |
penny is 16 weeks and her ears still flop ..i think its cute |
I might be the only one, but I think Chloe is adorable with her little flopping ears! I've done nothing to encourage, nor discourage them...and they go up and down as they please. If I had my choice, they'd stay floppy. Should be interesting to see what the end result will be! |
