Petsmart Story! I went to petsmart today to get food for my babies and some treats. So I am walking around looking and suddenly I see this lady with a beautiful yorkie pass by. She saw me and I saw her. So I approached her and petted her baby and she carried Ruby and was nice to her. Then she ask me what it was that I was walking Ruby on. I said it was a harness, a cat harness, then she ask me were I had bought it and i see there at petsmart. I told her she should get one for her baby as she had her with a collar and we all know their traceas are very sensible. So she walked on and I went to ask about the puppy training classes for Ruby. She came back with a harness and was trying to ask me something but i wanted to give my undivided attention to the information given to me by the trainer about the classes. I told her very quick that the harness she had grabbed was fine. Then I got a guilt trip and went back to help her and show her exactly what I had bought Ruby because I tought, well she might think I was rude at the end since I was so short with her while speaking to the trainer. She had mentioned her little girl was 3 years old and I had said Ruby was 7 months old. Then as we got to the end cap of the isle were the harness were I put Ruby down and started showing her the harnesses and she put her baby down and then I heard a horrible caughing honking noise that her dog was making. So I said is your dog sick and she looked at me like I was a little snoby and said know she does this all the time. I said sorry but you dog has a URI(upper respiratory infection), believe me I would know what it is as I went through this two times with both my dogs and for several months. She told me it was her understanding that this was common with yorkies. Boy is she clueless. I said know that she needed to give her dog amoxicilin, meaning she would have to take her to the vet and they would give her there Clavamox which is amoxcilin. She than thanked me for the advice and info. Now I am wondering how long this poor thing has had this URI because her mom thinks its common and also I hope this lady doesn't give her regular amoxicilin because i told her she needed to give her this rather than saying to take her to the vet and they would give her this which is what I really meant. She seems so clueless that now I am scared she might do it and that something might happen to the dog if give regular medication. i hope this lady has the common sense to figure it out. The lady was nice overall but just thinking that her baby has had this problem untaken care of for god know how long makes me sad. Sorry this is so long but this is how the story took place. |

Hopefully she listened to you. I would think if someone's dog was making an awful noise that they would take him or her to the vet and have things checked out. Whether it's "common" for the breed or not, I would want to know that things were okay. Thank goodness you ran into her last night! |
After reading your story first thing that came to my mind was collapse trachea being the poor thing have being using a collar for so long. So I just hope she had listened to you and took the poor dog to the vet to get check and get antibiotics if the poor baby had URI. |
Your right, some people don't have a clue! Sad, very sad |
I don't think you are giving yourself enough credit. You possibly are probably the one who soooo much just helped this Yorkie out by giving her owner all your information. I have faith that she will take her to the vet and get the medi needed for her Yorkie. I commend you for taking all that time to help her out, especially since you were so busy with the training class. That meant a lot to her I am sure and you really gave such life saving information to her about her furbaby!!! :aimeeyork Did you tell her all about Yorkie Talk by chance? :p |
I'm glad you explained to her that her dog could have an upper respiratory infection...You did everything you could, and I'm sure she'll take her dog to the vet. :) |
Oh I am so glad that you told her what you thought could be wrong...You might have very well saved that lil' furbaby's life..Good job  |
You're a very good person...Ruby Cupcake is very lucky! :p |
I will admit I'm a Newbie to this forum, but I must say, you guys sure seem to be a tough crowd! I think this lady obviously cares for her Yorkie or she wouldn't be buying a harness for her, wouldn't you agree? And come on folks, all of us are "clueless" until we know better. If this Yorkie mom believes what she was told about that sound her pup was making, that doesn't make her a bad mom, nor a stupid woman. And she actually sought out chechinmipo for more info - surely that's a sign of someone who loves their dog, wants good things for it, and is willing to learn how to make that happen? I learn new things about my beloved furkids all the time, and I hope no one would think less of me because I didn't know something they did, you know? ;) |

Also I am not the one to get into discussions but we all must understand this forum isn't about us its about yorkies and everything in ralation to them. The fact that we can post about personal things is an added plus but our companions are the common denominator here. Everything else maybe very well irrelevant. I do want to add I sure feel closlely conected to many members here and they make this a very unique and fun place. |
Well said! :) |

Wouldn't it be cool if a couple of weeks from now you two met at the Petsmart again and she huggs you for giving her the info she needed to make her Yorkies' life a healthy, happy one? :jump28ib: |
I am also sorry but I felt i was being attacked for a moment maybe I was wrong. I was trying to help. More than judging people i like to judge the overall state of their companions and if something i find isn't right I offer anything i can to help. Sorry again. |
yes i would agree, Tigger had been making weird sounds about once a day for the past week or so, and I was worried so I took him to the vet today, and he said that he was healthy and his trachea was solid and that what it could be is his soft palat growing and something that starts with an E is causing it to make this sound. Basically it's just an inward sneeze and all you need to do to stop it is close his mouth if it is open at the time and if that doesn't help blow a short breeze into his nose. He said it should stop at six months of age, but if I hear it getting worse or after six months it continues on, to bring him in. The doctor explained everything to me in detail and was really nice. I guess it's a common occurence with growing puppies. It sounded like a rough inhale, and sort sometimes sort of raspy, and drawn out. but his lungs are clear, trachea is solid, eyes and ears clear, anal glands empty, and overall looking good. so we'll see what happens. I hope this lady gets some common sense and takes her poor baby to the vet asap. |
I wouldn't worry about her giving her dog regular doses of amoxicilin. I doubt she has a supply just lying around, and no doctor would give her an Rx for a dog. She will need to see a vet. |
