On the road...for the 1st time Bentley is about to make his 1st trip w/ us. I am excited and nervous at the same time!! Hoping to get my carrier from ebay by then. We are going to Ft Worth for the weekend, TKD tournament for the school. Its about 4-5 hrs each way. Welcoming any advice and travel tips. I have been taking him in the car around town when can and he made a 2.5 hr trip when we brought him home. |
How old is he? We took Eddie on a 7-hour trip when he was just months old, and we were basket cases on the first leg. My wife wanted to pull over every 25 miles because he was fussy. But he never had to pee when we pulled over. By the return trip, he was a pro. The younger Bentley is, the more I'd tend to stop, but I would think one stop on a 4-hour trip would be plenty even for a pup. Give him a chance to pee and let him stretch his legs. We keep a doggy water bottle and food handy so stops are efficient and quick. Is the carrier you're talking about a car seat? He may take a while to adjust to that, but practice drives around town like you said Good luck. |
On road trips a lot... My husband & I always take our two furbabies with us on road trips. We started taking them along for a drive when they were three months old. We started on short trips...they got car sick for a while...that's why it's always handy having paper towels, baby wipes, & plastic bags nearby in case accidents happen...and they did happen...short trips become long ones...until they got used to it...We live in Burbank, Ca.. and the last road trip we did was to Seattle, WA. and it was a 1159 mile drive. We've taken them along with us to Grand Canyon, Sedona, Utah(Zion, Bryce, Arches), Lake Havasu, Az. We always fold down the back seats of our F-150 SuperCrew Truck, line in with a thick blanket, with their bed in one corner, a pee pad in one corner ( in case they can't hold it anymore before we make stop in the rest areas) which never gets used, and some toys that they can play with. Make sure too that you use the childproofed lock on all doors and windows because they could step on the side controls and accidentally open them. It happened to us and I really freaked out...   got so scared that they would jump out...good thing they dind't...we've learned our lesson so we always keep it childproofed locked all the time.We always have water and some treats nearby. They are pros drinking water out of regular water bottles without spilling because at home they drink out of those LIXIT water dispenser. Well...GOODLUCK...and I hope our road trip experiences would somehow help you... :) |
We've traveled with Rowdy since he was 3 1/2 months old. The trip to FW should be a breeze. We just put a towel in the seat between my husband and I and put some toys down for him to play with but he would only play for about 5 minutes and then he was out like a light. He would sleep for 2-3 hrs at a time. When he needs to go potty, he wakes up and starts walking back and forth between my hubby and I. We would stop, take him out to potty and exercise and then he'd fall back asleep when we started up again. We took small plastic containers with lids for food and water, but he eats and drinks very little in the car. You will need a harness and leash to take him to potty when you stop and be aware of all the trash on the ground at rest stops and gas stations, especially cigarette butts and chewing tobacco. Those are very toxic. You have to watch them like a hawk when they are trying to find a place to potty as they sniff everything and Rowdy like to pick up things off the ground. Enjoy your trip, they are usually very good travelers. |
