Vacation Questions....Help! I have Shay whom will be 1 yr.old the 22nd of this month...and new lil Bella..... We are to go on vacation next month, for a week...I dont think I can leave them home! I have a friend whom offered to come over a couple times a day..to feed, water and play with my babies...I also had set up a pet sitter, with whom is my friends daughter but my friend wants to watch them and canceled her daughter to come house/pet sit...Ugggg! Sooooooo looking at hotels that allow dogs, they don't seem to be very nice or secure... Usually when we go on vacation I take Shay, with my kids living in different states we always stay with them...so not a big deal to bring him along...This time we will be visiting with my husbands side of family in florida, but will be staying in a hotel....his mother and sister have BIG huge dogs, that I have heard are not very friendly...so they will be coming to us, to see us. What do ya 'll do when you are going on vacation? Sorry this was so long, wanted to give all the details... |
Google BringFido.com for a list of pet friendly hotels. We found the Comfort Inn and Holiday Inn through Bringfido for a little trip we are taking out east in a couple days. They allow you to leave your dog in the room alone (inside their crate or not) for periods like going out to dinner, etc.. They charge a $25.00 per day pet charge. |
Okay thanks!!!! I will go there now..... |
We stay at pet friendly hotels while on vacation. I always put the DND sign on the door handle, so no one will even open the door. I can always pick up towels at the front desk. When we leave the room, I put the yorkies in their play pen, it has a zippered top and can be completely enclosed. |
Small safety tip: before allowing your pet to roam the hotel room, check the floor very carefully, including under the beds, for anything that may have been left behind that could be a general health or choking hazard. (for instance, someone may have dropped an earring) Take a look around the room for electrical cords or other hazards that you would take care of at home. |

:thumbup:Excellent advice...I left that part out. We will keep Sophie in her doggie den while we're gone to dinner because I think she will feel more secure there with her own things. |

Not only choking hazards, but previous guests have been known to drop pills (their meds) that can roll to places only a dog can find. |
Thank you thank you thank you......all GREAT advice! I am so happy to hear it all, glad to know I am not only one that checks everything, always want to be safe, so no sorry! We will have exercise pen with us and all there stuff (lol) I think I found hotel on Bringfido.com...now to wait for hubby to get home, he knows the areas.. One more thing.....do you or would you, take you furbabies to the beach? I would think not a good idea, if they sniff the sand.. |

LOL....okay this will sound funny BUT i didnt even think that they wouldn't allow my babies, if I wanted to take them... lol So if they sniff the sand, it won't hurt them? I might add Shay has anteater tendencies...he sniffed everywhere..lol |
We live on Lake Michigan and Sophie loves the beach. Never had a sniffing problem. Can't wait for warmer weather :p |
i take my Pasquale to the beach all the time...i just give him a bath when we get home. He LOVES the beach. Just make sure you have an umbrella so your dog will have some shade to go under. What part of Florida are you going to? |
We always take the girls with us. I could never leave them anywhere. We do like the Marriott Residence Inn. They are pet friendly and do a really nice breakfast. Orlando FL Hotel: Residence Inn Orlando International Drive - a Hotel in Orlando FL near Orlando Convention Center and Orlando Theme Parks |
Lots of pet friendly hotels, Marriot, La Quinta, Comfort Inn allow in most--it's pretty easy to find pet friendly hotels. Our baby travels with us constantly. |
Our girls go everywhere we go. There is some great advice on here. I try not to leave them in the room alone. We take our stroller with us. These are great you dont have to hold them all the time and if you are shopping you can have free hands if needed. We take 2 sets of keys for the car. If it is too hot or cold we will leave it running with the doors locked. We run into burger king or somewhere quick. This way we can park the car where we can see it. We also take our baby gate. There is usually a small hall entering the room. We place the gate there just in case the door is opened. Also check with hotel to make sure you can leave them there alone. Some are pet friendly but you can not leave them unattended. The beach we goto in NC will allow them before 9am and after 5pm. |
The advice you got is all very good. We are planning a road trip back east also but we are driving a VW camper bus so we won't have to deal with motel/hotel situations (unless we decide to take a break from camping). I'd love to take Sunshine to the beach once the weather is warmer. His sire and dame both love romping in the sand from what their humans told us:) |
Ya! Or beer bottle caps! We found 5 or so the last time at our timeshare! I was livid and complained! Didn't have a dog with me, but still!!! I wouldn't leave Sophie for more than an hour or so and only on one of the nights were gone. I'll leave the TV on for her and hopefully she'll nap. We are going to see our son who's back in the U.S. from deployment after a year and meet his girlfriend for the first time. We want to take them to dinner someplace nice and not have to sit on the bed to eat, ha,ha. The car running thing is a good idea for a quick bite. After that one evening Sophie will be with us all the time. No family member can watch her while we're gone so it was either this way or board her which we don't do. |
You have already gotten excelletn advice! I just wanted to add I have always taken Maddie with us and we stay in much nicer hotels than we did before her.:D Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn, Best Western. Most the budget hotels we might usually pick were not pet friendly:rolleyes: Good luck to you! |
Thanks everyone for all the GREAT ADVICE!!!!! Boarding not an option for them, I couldn't.....and if pet/home sitter came through, I dont think I could leave them for a whole week....truth? I know I couldnt...lol So glad ya 'll feel what i do, so easy to ask for advise, when you know everyone loves there furbabies too... Thanks |
3 Attachment(s) We just returned from a 1840 mile road trip with Sophie. We stopped at rest areas and let her walk around and do her business. She did great. We stayed at pet friendly hotels and it worked wonderfully. We stayed at Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn and Best Western. All of them were very nice places (updated, clean & smelled good) and they all allowed Sophie to stay in the room while we were out for a little while for dinner and such. Sophie wasn't ever alone for very long. She stayed in her doggie den and napped and housekeeping was able to come in to clean the room. Not a peep out of her, she was terriffic. Here's some photos of our travelin' yorkie. Sophie loved the trip. Hope you have a great time on yours :D |
That is AWESOME!!! Thanks for sharing. I hope our little Molly is as good as yours when she is all better and the time comes for us to travel this summer. I am a bit nervous about the one though beacause I am going to sneak her into our timeshare end of June. (I really need to get one of those carseats. :) Quote:

I did find that most of the upscale hotels are pet friendly and were able to leave them in the room unattended. I leave my cell phone # with the front desk should there be any problems. When I arrive I look for house keeping to let them know we are traveling with pup's and they get a time frame for cleaning so I can remove the pup's. If your nice and give them a tip they will clean your room first thing in the morning. One of our favorite pet friendly vacations is Outer Banks NC We stay in the Pine Island Area where the beach is pet friendly. |

:thumbup::thumbup: great advice! Especially if you're taking a driving vacation. I would only leave my baby alone at night (probably one night) to go out to dinner. Not during the day though. I'm scared she'd get out when the maids come in, then lost, then stolen. Wow, I've never heard of a beach that doesn't allow dogs. I guess the Texas beaches aren't that picky because I've seen dogs on them all my life. But then our beaches aren't that clean either with years of oil spills :( |

I brought the small xpen with us in the car and it was very handy. |
