Please help! Bringing new pup home! Hello all, I'm finally bringing my baby girl home on the 23rd after MONTHS of waiting! I'm so excited and I'm trying to prep my home for our first dog. I know all of the basics (I've been on this site for a couple of months reading up on all kinds of things!) like securing wires, cabinets, and keeping them in sight at all times. The breeder is sending me a box full of goodies before my Sasha arrives (that's her new name!), things like food, toys, t-shirt, coupons, shampoo... but for the other things that I need, like a collar and harness, should I wait until she gets here and just take her to Petsmart with me? Is that safe with such a small breed? The last thing I want is someone's huge dog jumping all over her. Being that she will still be adjusting to my family and be out of her comfort zone (she's been with the breeder in Texas for six months), will she do OK outside of my house? LIke, if I put her in a small bag to take her out will she pee or poo in it? Any suggestions you might have for me on helping her make a comfortable transition to my family would be greatly appreciated! |
first of all congrats on your new baby! I did not take my Pixie anywhere except to the vet for her shots until she had all her shots. I didn't want her to pick up anything anywhere. Once she has had all her vaccinations I would take her to pet smart but I would not let her interact with other dogs bc she was so small and you can never be sure what another dog will do. Also I did not let other people handle her until she was 4 months. I would have friends over at christmas and I told them that they could NOT pick up my puppy bc she hadn't had all her shots yet and I didn't want her to get sick. I think you have to be careful bc they are so small. Also I would recommend a ex-pen for your dog. I have a picture on my in my album it is the album of when I first got Pixie. I had it set up in the elongated way, her bed at one food in the middle and a pee pad where the gate was. When I was not going to be home Pixie went in her pen. I felt good about this bc she couldn't get into anything and she was safe from hurting herself. I would put toys in there so she could play. I still put Pixie in there when I go somewhere. I also have a 6 yr old Jack-a-poo and i can't be sure that they won't rough play too much. So when I leave Pixie goes in her ex-pen and she is use to this. If you have any questions there is a lot of support here on YT. Good luck and enjoy your new baby:) |
I used this toplinepet.com harness /leash combo when Laci first came home, its great because its not to expensive and it grows when they do!! Its also easy to go on and off... Jenny is quick to ship also!! I suggest you poke around her site, she has some pretty bows and grooming supplies as well!!! I do not and didnt use a collar when my puppy was little!! It can get caught on things and they can choke Also I do not recommend taking her to petsmart until her shots are completed.. lots of germs going on in there!! I also suggest you wait until she is full grown to get the harness leash combo you want.. alot of people like the Buddy belt and custom leash /step in harness by Chattiesmom... ( cindy) who is also on this site! |

YW and I am sure that you are going to just love having a Yorkie. They just make your world a brighter place, never a dull moment;) Have fun!!Kennel-Aire Exercise Pens - Exercise Pens - Crates & Kennels - PetSmart that is the ex-pen I got bc you can change the shape and make it elongated. I got the smaller of the 2 that they have on there. |
as a breeder this is the list I send to get home ready for the new puppy.. Getting your home ready for your puppy... Bringing a young puppy home is just like bringing in a real baby, but this one moves faster and loves to chew everything in sight. So to prevent that we need to get ready for your puppy’s arrival.. 1. A must have is a small X- pen – You can find one at a reasonable price at your local Pet Store. I bought my 2 at my local pet good store for $70.00 each. 2. Ceramic or Stainless steel Bowls for food and water, Plastic ones retain bacteria and odors. 3. Plenty of puppy pads- I order mine online from a medical supply and get much more than the ones at the pet stores. Washable pads are very good too.. I use those for the little ones. 4. Bitter Chew or Sour apple Spray, if your pup shows interest in your shoes or furniture just spray a bit of this to discourage him from wanting to chew it. 5. A sweater- your puppy is a silkie non sheding dog, he has no under coat therefore if you are cold your pup is cold. A sweater and a coat is a necesity for this breed. 6. A leash, Collar, harness and name tag.. 7. A crate for your puppy to sleep, and to transport him to and from in outings , your puppy is been trained to sleep in a plastic crate since he was 6 weeks old. Moving the crate from the x pen to your bedroom at night will prevent the puppy from being lonely and crying at night. 8. Your puppy eats a very high quality all stages food, you will get a sample bag from me and a small can, your pup should stay on this food is one of the best foods in the market today. Make sure you have a small bag at home for him, he eats a mix of wet and kibble ¼ of a cup, 3 times a day to prevent hipoglicemia. Until he is one year old, then he eats twice a day, small toy breeds need two small meals a day after age one. 9. A tube of Nutri-Cal found is most pet stores, is a most for any puppy owner. Sometimes you need to give a pea size drop to your puppy if he is not feeling well and a bottle of Karo clear syrop in case his/her blood sugar gets low. 10. Keep your puppy indoors and away from other dogs until all his vaccines are done. |
If she's never been in a pet carrier/bag before it might take some getting used too. It might be better for you just to carry her if you're going to the pet store. You'll have to get her used to being carried in a bag. If it's the type that opens from the front and back, you can leave it sitting on the floor in your house and leave it open so she can explore it on her own. You might try putting a few treats in there so she'll be willing to go inside. |

I would avoid petstores until she is fully vaccinated... I work 2 jobs and my part tiem job is petsmart and I brought Bailey there once and she got kennel caugh for being in there for 3 minutes...you can never predict what kind of dog snif an object and left residue on it and then poof bailey sniffs the same thing and got sick... or if you do keep her in your arms at all time and dont let a bunch of people take her. Better be cautious. Other then that I am sure you will be ready... Alot of people wait until they are full grown for a harness just to make sure they dont need ot buy a few diff size as she grows up. Good luck with everything and CONGRATS!!!!:animal36 |

yes the first round of shots should be at 9, 12 and 16 weeks, then when they are ONE year old you can have her titer and see if she is lacking something. also at one some states mine included require a rabies shot. hugs, Carmen in nj |
Summer Infant Surround Sound Play Yard : Target I got this one on craigslist for 5 dollars.. yes that says 5 bucks, they were having a yard sale and no one bought it... it was in brand new condition :D:D |
HI and Congrats on getting a little girl! Cute name too! I got my ex-pen from Wal-mart. ordered it online at a good price and they delivered it to the Wal-mart nearest to my home. For pee pads, I use waterproof crib pads (full crib size). At Wal-mart 2 for $11.50. You should seriously think about getting her micro chipped and get her an ID tag now. If you get a collar, get "break-away", like a cat one (velcro). Lots of people recommend putting a bell on your baby so you know where she is at! Have fun, post pictures! :D Donna |
