Am I a bad Yorkie Mom?? Zoe is really small and dainty so when we go to bed, Or we have alot of company at once, Or we leave the house without her for awhile I put her in a *pen* (about 4 ft by 4 ft) and in it she has food/water a bed toys and a litter box... I do it for her safety as this house is HUGE (2600 sq ft) with alot of stairs and such and I let her out when I am home... Anyways in the past few days I had a comment from my neighbour and also my landlord about how its unfair to her, And now I am feeling guilty for putting her in there... Am I a bad mom?? |
Uhhhh.....NO!!! You're a good mom for keeping your yorkie safe!! Most people chose to crate their yorkies, or put them in a ex-pen, or I've heard of some people putting them in a bathroom, to keep them safe when they are out of the house. Who knows what they could get into while you're out. They could chew wires, eat something off the floor, jump off a stair and break a bone or hurt their neck, the list is endless. If you're in a bad mood next time someone makes a comment like this, you may want to respond "because I actually care what happens to my dog while I'm out....sorry if my being a responsible dog owner offends you!" lol. When some dogs are older they can be trusted to not do those things, but def not puppies. We still crate Bandit while we're at work and he's almost 3! He stays out if we're gone for a hour or two, but when we're gone for work he stays in his crate, and Nala is always in her crate if we are not there to watch her. |

Maximo is not small or dainty and he goes in the x-pen when he isn't supervised. Granted, he has only been alone about twice in his whole life. :p I'm exaggerating -- just a little. I also kept him in his pen for protection alot when my 4 rambunctious little nephews visited. |
It's not mean at ALL! Puppies can get into things - you have to keep them safe. I had an ex-pen for Jackson and I would always put him in it as a pup but it didn't last long lol. I guess I got lucky because Jackson has never been a chewer or a pooper or anything when I'm gone. He's been totally trustworthy since about 4 1/2 months old and has always had pretty much free roam so I guess I just got lucky. But certain puppies will chew anything & everything! But you are being a good yorkie mom! |
Your doing a Great job Mom! |
The safety of our furbabies is very important and they have to rely on us to protect them. Taking their safey seriously can never be wrong....good for you! |
I think a very good mom...I ALWAYS ALWAYS put Shay either in pen or Kennel before I go ANYWHERE.... I also put him in pen when more then a couple ppl come over (sometimes when it is just one person)....and always when someone brings a child in.... I would just die if something happened to him....so okay I am a lil over the top...but I know he is safe |
Not a bad mom. Doing what's best for your baby, that's all. Most of the time when our babies are home alone they sleep anyway unless they are very young. Then they can get into trouble so making her safe is in no way a bad thing. Where you have your baby is perfect as it makes her feel safe while you are away. It's her safe place and I'm sure she would rather be there then having the run of the house. Giving them the run of the house can also lead to seperation anxiety. So you are doing the best thing for her.:D |
You the opposite of a bad mom...you are being a great mom. MY two are 3 and 18 mos. and I never leave them free roaming in the house when I can't supervise. There is just too much risk of them getting into something or climbing on something and falling. |
Just a thought but since it is a landloard and a neighbor that made these comments, if it possible that she might be barking or crying when you leave for a while? Probably not, but might be a possibility. Either way though, I think you are doing the right thing. I never leave Missy running free when we are not here to watch her. She is only 4 months and small and there is just to much that could happen to her if we weren't here to keep and eye on her. She also sleeps in her pen at night. |
I think you are a fine mom. I think they are more secure in a smaller area so they don't have so much to "guard" while you are away. |

I'm finding that my dog goes into his tent or small kennel to nap when I leave the room for more than a few minutes. He probably feels more secure that way. Also, I keep the hall doors shut so that he cannot access the living room/dining room/front foyer unless he is supervised. I recently started opening the doors to try to teach him to "stay" and wait for me at the bottom of the stairs. He doesn't wait; he goes back into the great room where he is usually limited to during the day -- and where he must feel safe. :) |

No she doesn't bark when I am out...The landlord was here doing paperwork because I am moving out in March and sorta made a few comments about how she was in her pen and what a sad boring life that must be, made it sound like she was in prison.. And the neighbour was over trying to sell me Avon later the same day and she was like *Ohh I hope your new place is smaller so many poor Zoe can finally be free to roam the house and not be all cooped in in a cage all the time* Grrrr Well of course she is in the cage when they come over because when the dorrbell rings I put her in her pen before I answer it...ugh |
You're doing the right thing. I leave Brandi in her ex-pen (4x4 mesh with a top and bottom)whenever I leave the house as well. It protects her and my carpets :p. I have to admit she hates being in there but there so many things that she can get into when I am not there. For the most part she does sleep but in between naps, she is constantly looking for ways to escape. It's kind of funny actually because you would of thought she given up by now. While Brandi does have toys, she doesn't play with them. This could be the result of her previous life before me so not even toys will occuppy her. She doesn't have separation anxiety as she usually goes to sleep as soon as I leave. I have a webcam on her so I can see what she's doing. So I would say don't worry about what others think. You are doing what's best for your puppy. |
If that's being a bad mom then I must be horrible too ;) I leave Simon and Hallie in my bedroom while I'm away. I used to leave them in an xpen but Simon quickly figured out how to jump it *sigh* I tried to give them full run of my old apartment but Simon panicked with all the space so now they nap in my bed :) |
