Scratching and hair loss I'm having a problem that's been ongoing for quite a while now. She started scratching and biting at her back legs until she would start to lose her hair in patches. It would progress until it looked like someone had shaved her. We took her to the vet, she didnt have fleas, mange, or mites. We have her on frontline just in case. We think we have in narrowed down to some sort of an allergy. The vet has put her on a type of steroid twice to stop with the itching. When she is on the steroid she stops scratching and her hair grows back. While she was on the steroids, I switched her food to a hypo allergenic to try and rule out food allergies. Now that shes been off the steroids for about 3 weeks, she's started scratching again. I think it's possibly a seasonal allergy or something very common. I really dont know what else to do besides get her an allergy test, but that costs around $600. Any suggestions? |
How old is she? Maybe its the shampoo that you are using? Do you have carpeting, it could be that. I would probably just get the allergy test done so she could be so much happier. :) |
scratching My 17 yr. o;d mini poo does the same thing. She has scratched and "eat" her fur off for years. Right now, her fur is off half up her back from the rear. Just red naked skin. I have had her tested and treated over and over and nothing works. I am ashamed to even take her to be groomed. She is miserable and I can't help her. I've changed her shampoo, food and everything except the carpet. I am beginning to think after all these years that I need to put hardwood floors down. She does eat some table food. Can't help but give it to her she is so pitiful. The pug also eats table food so how can I not give Sugar some? One vet did tell us that would cause it but we stopped giving her people food for awhile and it didn't get better. I sure hope my new Yorkie doesn't start that. i even use neosporin on some of the trouble spots. it started like 'hot spots" and just gradually got worse. She literally pulls her fur out with her teeth. |
We've changed her shampoo from baby shampoo, to anti-itch, to oatmeal. Nothing seems to change. Oh well. Im going to wait it out a couple of more months to see if the hypo allergenic foods starts to work. Im really not sure what else to do. |
Did the vet do a skin scraping to rule out mites/scabies? Hair loss and constant itching are culprits to the nasty critters. |
Our Rotti did the same thing, nothing seemed to work untill someone told me to change her food to Pro Plan. I'm not sure what was in that food, but it took it away. All her fur was coming back in a month, by three months you would have never known she had any problems. After all the steroid & different shampoos, it ended up being her food. :) Her vet was amazed!!! Good luck! |
