Finding a Vet
 
I am trying to find a vet for my new baby Knox that I get in a few weeks. I live in Abilene TX and have not had a vet here before. I was wondering if there were any tips on how to find one that I can really trust, or if there were any websites that could maybe help me with this. :thumbs up

When I was looking for a new vet, I made sure to call around and ask a lot of questions. One that was very important to me was wanting to know if they were familer with "small breeds". I hope you are able to find a great vet. It is nice to be able to trust them and have a good relationship with your vet.:animal36

How about contacting other yorkie breeders in your area and see if they have any suggestions?

Exactly!

At first I wanted a vet close to my home, but I new of an excellent established vet clinic that is well known with small breeds here in Austin, closer to my work place. So I chose it instead. I will pick my furbaby Cerise up on Sunday.

Ask everyone you see with a small dog for info and don't be shy when it comes to questioning the vet clinics about their practices. Oh, don't be surprised by some people who will just say I go to Petco or Petsmart, or even some don't go to vets at all :eek:

A great place to start looking for a vet is the AAHA. They have standards that vets must maintain in order to keep their accreditation....and that includes continuing education for them and for the vet techs!
American Animal Hospital Association
Also, there are members from your area who may be able to suggest a good vet. I am going to PM one of them now.

All great suggestions! You can also post this question in the Regional section on YT and other Yorkie owners/breeders in your area may have recommendations :)

Thanks everyone. Great ideas. I didn't know that there was a Regional section. I am about to try and find that, I was wondering how to find YT members close to me. Thanks for the hlep. :)
