New Yorkie Mom 4 Attachment(s) Hi All! My family just adopted a sweet 1 yr old 4 lb boy named Rusty (still want to figure out how to change his name without confusing him!) My sons and I have been wanting a Yorkie for forever and hubby finally broke down and said "Yes"! We found a sweet boy whose family could not keep him anymore and brought him home with us to meet our Beagle Mix Stedman who is 7 and our crazy Cat who is 2. It was love at first sight for him with our Beagle! Matter of fact to much love...haven't figured out yet how to keep the playing from turning into humping. That will drive you crazy lol! The Cat could care less about him as long as he isn't trying to hump her. She is pretty laid back and easy going. Her and our Beagle are best buddies so we figure before to long she will love Rusty too. Hubby still has to warm up fully to our new baby as he is a bigger dog lover. I think once we get past the humping stage he will like him alot better LOL! Do have a few questions though. 1. He was not neutured when we got him. Hubby is not to keen on the neuturing idea..thinks it is cruel. Our Beagle mix is neutured because we adopted him from the humane society. Would this help with the humping? Or because is already a year old is it now habit? The lady we got him from said he had never humped their male Chi before which I don't fully believe so we are kinda at a loss. 2. He is not registered and his ears don't stand up!! Also, he is a tan color with some grayish looking hair in the middle of his back. Down at the roots of his hair on his back is very dark...does this mean he is not full Yorkie? He almost looks in his face like he might have some Maltese in him> Not that it matters to me LOL! I can't wait to get to know you all better! Look forward to reading what you all have to say! |
Aww he is just adorable, Congrats on your new addition!! I am quite sure that neuturing him will make him not only stop humping but marking your house!! Also it is much healthier for him.. I would do that sooner then later. He is really adorable. ;) |
He's gorgeous and has a lovely coat bless him. I'd have him neutered too. Hugs Shirl x x |
Welcome to YT. I'm sure you'll get very good advise. But, I would neuter him. |
He know has an neuter appt at our Vets office! Hubby will just have to get over it! Thanks on the compliments on his Coat...he gets brushed daily cause everytime he wants to wrestle with the big dog it gets all ugly looking LOL! |
Hello and welcome to YT!! He is absolutely adorable! Glad that you are getting him neutered. I am sure that will take care of your problem. Yorkies are famous for their messy, bed-head look. LOL |
Congratulations on your addition. He looks all yorkie to me. Yes. Neutering him will help prevent him from getting cancer when he gets older. Plus, it is the responsible thing to do. Welcome to YT.:) |
If you want to change his name just call him by both names for a while. Eventually he will recognize the new part of his name and adapt quite easily. He has such a sweet face - I wonder if he might not be part maltese as well because of his coloring. Congratulations of your new addition - he looks like a sweetie! |
Great suggestion. Someone also told me that maybe if we picked something that ends in "y" it may be easier. I am trying to find a name that suits his personality. Thanks for all the welcomes! Can't wait to get to know you all better and start posting more. |
Hello and welcome to YT:animal-pa Maybe Dusty would work for a name, it is a lil different but still sounds close to his original name. |
I just recently got a yorkie, we kinda "rescued" him. His name was Gizmo....I started calling him Rylie from the time I saw him and he knew his name within a day. So, just give him a new name and go with it. I would have also suggested to neuter him! |
My Hubby said he was going to start calling him "Humpy" haha if the neutering doesn't cure that urge LOL! I like Bailey, Bentley, Remy Our kids said he needs a unique name because all of our animals have a strange name. He is so funny every time he gets in trouble and gets told No he immediately rolls over on his back wanting you to scratch his belly...almost like a kid who tries to make you laugh to forget why you got on to them in the first place. |
Just a question, is his rolling over a scared roll over or a happy roll over? When we got Rylie you could tell he had been hit, beaten, or something... He pooped on the floor and I scolded him (did not hit him) but I did make him stay in the bathroom while I cleaned it up and I just said bad dog...He went and hid behind the toilet and wouldn't come out until I told him to. So I wonder if his rolling over is from fear or play? |
Definitely playful rolling over. He has this haha look at me bet you can't resist petting me look on his face. One more question: When it is time to go potty when we first come home or first thing in the AM he will not let me put his leash on calmly. He does beserk, barking, jumping up and down, running around in circles. etc. I know he has to really really go potty and is doing his "potty dance" but it is almost impossible to get his leash on him! Any suggestions on helping him to listen to the sit command when he is at his most excited?:animal-pa |
Congratulations!! He is a cutie. Love his silky coat. |
He is really soooo cute! When you get a dog that has had another home, I think sometimes you really have to retrain some things they do. The previous owner's situation may have been different and they may not have put a leash on them and maybe let them out into a back yard to go potty. I personally don't take ours out without a leash because they are so small. I don't want a big bird to pick them up!! Does he know how to sit on command? If so, maybe he'll calm down after you work with him a while and know what you want. If not, its a good place to start training. I noticed you are in Locust Grove, Ga. I am close by in Hampton, Ga. Good Luck!!:aimeeyork |
Hi Neighbor;) He will sit on command "sometimes" when he is not being distracted by other things such as where Stedman, Daddy or the boys are LOL! If I can get his attention he will sit. I have also started to put Stedman in his room for a little while every afternoon and work with Rusty alone on training like sit, stay, lay down. I don't think his other family used a leash but to me that is the only way to go. Because like you said I am so afraid of a bird getting him (and we have huge vultures that fly around because our house backs up to 500acres of Wetlands) and also because we go camping alot and I want him leash trained so he won't have culture shock the first time we take him to a campground. I pretty much think his other family just babied him and didn't really expect him to "Do" much other than be cute...which don't get me wrong is perfectly fine! I just like my dogs to listen to my command and be well trained so we are working on that!! I am hoping he starts to pick up habits from Stedman who is wonderfully trained. He already is his little shadow. Wherever Stedman goes he goes! It is so cute!!! |
