About coats: I searched this one and never found the answer..... I am just wondering, what age does a puppys coat change? When are they completely done changing. Toby is 3 months---yesterday--- and he has only changed on his eyebrows, and just a little bit of white in them. I don't really care what color he is, but I was wondering if he might still change or if there is a good chance that he will stay black. Also, his hair is silky on his head and cottony on him body? When will I know if he will be silky or cottony? And finally is there anyone in here that have puppies with cottony hair? What kind of hair cut do you get for them. I got Toby trimmed and he looks awful---like he has split ends or something??? But I don't want to let him grow out really long. I want him to look like a little man. :) But he whins when I try to brush him around his but and back of his legs. Thank you, :animal36 |
All yorkies are different and their coats change at different times. Some very early. Mine is almost 10 months and still have 99% black on her coat and just a little steel gray on her the tops of her legs but her stomach has more of the gray coming though. Just like yours she has more of the silky texture on her head but her coat is more of the cottony/wooly type. A good shampoo and conditioner is a must and the CC Systems works well for me. I will post a picture of her when I get home from work and you will be able to see her coat has a slight wave pattern to it. One things that has amazed me is how fast it grows. I have gotten it cut/shaved several times and it grows back so fast. I think I would go with what is easier for you when it comes to grooming because it can be work. Hope that helps. |
In regard to that split end look, remember not to brush him "dry". Spray a good dog leave-in conditioner on him before brushing. In regard to color, they are all different. You will probably notice his head changing first. Part his hair on his head and see if you see new growth that is kind of nubby. The color change kind of sneeks up on you. You'll notice it on his back right down the middle secondly. I think you may find that people will say that their Yorkies color change takes years. A lot of them tend to get lighter as they get older. I love the saying someone on here once posted....."A Yorkie is like a box of chocolates".....SO TRUE :D |
2 Attachment(s) Every yorkie is different, but they can continue to change colors until they are two years old. He is just beginning to go through changes, you will see lots of change in the next year or two! :p Even his coat texture might change... although his body seems cottony now, as his adult coat comes in that may change to a more silky texture. In other words... at this point it is just too early to tell! But one thing is for sure, he will be beautiful no matter what! ;) You might consider a puppy cut or even a shaved body (like a schnauzer cut) if you are have trouble brushing him. If his hair mats really bad, then he isn't going to enjoy being brushed. If you don't want to cut his hair, you might try some different shampoo/conditioner products. I use the ice on ice leave in conditioning spray(CC system products) and that cuts back on the tangles a lot. Or something similar to reduce the snags... Take lots of pictures, they change soooo much during the first year! I look at pictues of my babies from just a few months ago and I can't believe the changes... :eek: |
Bailey is 16 months old and is still pretty dark on his back.. so who knows. I have read in my Yorkie books that they should have their adult coats by the time they are 2. We'll see. |
The mom that I just retired was black and gold til she was 18 months. She began to change her color across her hips then and continued to lighten for the most part til she left here at age 6 years. As for the soft coat..puppy coats are deceptive and you might not know what texture the coat will be til the puppy coat is shed. IF, the coat continues to be soft, and IF you want a longer coat, use thinning shears and hold the layers up, starting at the part down the back. Take a few whacks with the thinners til you have an approximate amt that you like. Both hobbyists and show breeders manage full, unruly coats that way. I know you will enjoy that baby no matter what the coat texture is.. |
Maggie is 7 months old and has changed colors many times. Her head is platinum with some golden brown here and there. Her body is a dark slate gray. When she was younger she looked like a Roth or Doberman puppy. All black and tan. Her hair is fine as a human baby. We keep her in a puppy coat, only because she likes to go outside and play with the big dogs. I tried the longer hair, but she picks up yard debris like a magnet. |
