Mammy changing my name? Mammy changing my name? :aimeeyork? After getting several confused comments from people about the sex of my pup after hearing HIS name:eek:, I'm considering changing it. However, he is 19 weeks already and I'm concerned he might get confused... Recently when I got him, I red and red and had a hard time deciding for a name:rolleyes:. My younger sister named him Sugar, and I accepted after concluding that Sugar was a name for both sexes. However, people are always inferring that he is a SHE. Do you think he can learn to obey other name? Any suggestions (name)?? I appreciate your opinions and comments! ;) |
I think it'll be fine. he's a baby still. I had a foster boy who was one year old and didn't seem to know his name. i decided to call him Chuy and he started to respond to it. i say go for it! |
Bristol is just over 3 months and already knows her name but I believe that they will adapt and can learn a new name. I do associate Sugar as more female but hey you could be a trendsetter? ;) |
Victoria Stillwell teaches a dog his " new" name buy doing this~ What ever you name him, sit in front of him and say the name, each time he looks at you when you say the name say good boy.......... ( name ) give the treat... do it through out the next few days, keep saying the name and when he acknowledges it buy even a simple glance at you , treat him with a GREAT treat.. he will learn his new name quickly!;) |
He probably does not know his name yet, but if he does respond to it, then say his new name first and then his old name and he will soon start to anticipate his old name when he hears the new name. Say his new name when you feed him, or give him treats or affection. They really do not understand the concept of a naame anyway, just that when you say that "word" they are going to get something nice. Which is why you should never use their name when you scold them. |
I got Fancy when she was 10 1/2 months old. Her name was Bella but she adapted to Fancy right off. The breeder told me don't let anyone say her old name for at least 2 weeks. My nephew has a dog named Bella is why I changed her name. By the way, she looks more like a Fancy than a Bella.:) |
I got Kona when she was 7 years old. Her previous owners called her Sweat Pea. While that is a cute name it just didn't feel right to me for my baby. I decided to call her Kona. We started out saying "Sweat Pea Kona" for the first few days but after a week she was answering to Kona all of the time. I was really worried about changing her name after 7 years but she learned quickly. |
Thank you... @ capt noonie: Wow, Uni and Kaji sound so original and mysterious. Thanks! @ I believe Sugar (4months) also understands his name, or at least responds to it well. Haha like the trendsetter idea. By the way, your puppies are beautiful! @ jeanm1963—woo! Sounds like a good plan to me. I’m sure I’ll try that. Thanks so much! @ Jeaniek- I’ll have to tell my sister to stop scolding Sugar calling his name… It’s a little difficult living with other people because they want to apply their ideas with the puppy which most likely differ from mine. Thanks! @ cawsumb—Thanks for sharing your story as it’s a clear example of what I intent to do! Hi to Kona =) PS- will appreciate if anyone offers any suggestions for a male name =) |
He's your dog. If you like sugar I say keep it. |
We changed Sissy's name from Trixie when we got her and she didn,t have a problem |

Any rescue dog generally gets three names: one from his prior life, one while at the shelter, and then the new family generally changes the name again. It works out fine. As JeannieK says, they don't really know it's their name in the existential sense - to them it's a verbal prompt meaning, "look over here." I would also assume a dog named Sugar was a girl, but I think it's kind of a cool boy's name. It sort of reminds be of Elvis, or something: "come 'ere, Sugah". People ALWAYS think Thor's a girl, I guess he is just a very girl-y looking dog. He and Sugar can be metrosexuals. :) |
We adopted Jax at age 10 years from rescue. He had been named Saxon prior to us. He caught on very quickly to his new name! |

I have a Sugar too.....and people call her "HE" with a BOW in her hair and a PINK DRESS .....ya can't win with some people ;) |
My dogs all have about 5 nicknames and they respond to all of them, so I don't think you should have any problem changing a name. Actually we use the nicknames so much, I don't even know if they know what their real names are.:) |
Hehee! My furbaby is a SHE and her name is Sugar. Hmm...personally I think Sugar is a girly name, if you wanna change it, it's not too late! He's still a baby :D |
I think it is very important for owners to be comfortable with the names we give to our dogs. Although dogs understand very little of the spoken language, they "read" the intonations in your voice and your body language very well. If you call him by a name that you either don't like or aren't comfortable with, Sugar WILL sense it. Most of my dogs have nicknames -- some of which have no relationship to their "real" name. For example - Emmitt is also known as Go ByeBye Boy, M's, Emmie, and Doodlebug-Doodlebug. LOL they all share one favorite common "nic" and that's Wanna Treat? They all come running to that one. |

My dogs answer to about anything: Isabella - Bella - Bella Boo - Boo Boo - Baby Boo ... They don't much mind as long as I'm happy when I call them and they get loved on when they get there :D If you think he really identifies with his current name, use it and his new name at the same time, then just his new name after a while. They're really a lot more flexible than we give them credit for ;) BUT, he's your dog, so name him what you want. If you like Sugar, then Sugar it is. You should hear what I called my hubby at times, and it didn't decrease his manliness any :D: |
I took in a rescue at 10 years old and he began to respond in two days. You should be fine. If you feel he is your little sugar go with it. My Dad still refers to Lola as a "he" and I could careless because he loves and adores her. I don't even correct him anymore~ |
I adopted an adult Akita (7 yrs old) who was named Bandit, but that name just didn't do justice to the beautiful, proud dog... so I changed it to Beowulf! From the get-go I called him Beowful when petting him, feeding him, playing with him, etc... he understood his new name in less than a week. Old dogs really can learn new tricks! :D But I do think that Sugar is a very sweet name! |
My aunt is a professional dog trainer and I recently asked her the same question, if I could change a dog's name if it was a year or two old. She said that dog's don't have the same sense of identity when it comes to their names like we do. They see their name as a command like "come" instead of the word belonging to them. If they are really used to their current name, the best way to change it would be to start by combining the new name with the old name and then gradually wean them off of the old name. Another sidenote: the reason many puppies do not always come when called is when their owners have used their name when yelling at them, so be careful when you use their name! You'd never want your dog to ignore you when they were in danger just because they associated their name with getting in trouble!! |
I think Sugar is a cute name!! but that being said, it won't matter to the pup...my Billie is a girl and I correct people on occassion...here not so much, with the 'ie' on the end I guess people infer she is a she! I didnt change her name when I got her (she was already 5 years old), it just didn't occur to me, but I am very much looking forward to naming my next pup. In the meantime though, my hubby has taken to calling her "Dufus" (affectionately...but still) and she has started to answer to it - so I guess its never too late!! heres a link I like the lists on here, if you are looking for ideas: The Complete Male Dog Names List... A Must-See Male Dog Names Resource |
You could keep the name Sugar and put something manly on the end as Bear, Man, etc. |
I got my sheltie at 1.5 years old and his name was "Anchor" because he has an anchor shape on his forhead. I really didnt like the name and didnt think it fit him well so I changed it to Toby.. he was coming to it in about 3 days. So I think your pup would be fine if you changed his name. Alot of rescues change the animals name, to single a start to a new life..:)... congrats on your new pup..:) |
I changed molly's name when i rescued her aged 2 years. She soon learnt the new name and i just called her by her old name to see if she responded and she didnt even look round, so you will be fine if you decide to change it. |
Coral was Cleo for awhile, but i kept confusing her name with my other dog Lilo, so we changed it. I tried to stay with something that sounded close, but it ended up working out and now she has abou 5 names she goes by! |

His name does not help to clear it up since it can go either way, although I named him after a FrenchMAN (and not the liquor) Back on topic... if you like Sugar, keep it! |
