every how often should i put mother in with pups @ 1week old i would like to know every how often is it that i should put my female diva to nurse her 1week old pups; i dont want to over feed them. any advice any one? thanks and god bless' :D |
Mom and pups should be together all the time. Right now there is no such thing as overfeeding them. When she gets ready to wean them she will spend less and less time with them. For each female the time to start weaning is different. |
The mother should be with the pups all the time right now...it's up to her to decide when it's time to leave for potty breaks or to take a minute out of the whelping area...not you and she will wean the pups when the time comes. She will come and go as her pups need her. Is her area set up so she can come and go from the whelping area if she needs to or does she have potty pads in that area for her to use when needed? |
The pups should be with mother all the time, expecially the first 8 weeks of their lives. She will determine when wants out. Just keep an extra bed in the whelping area where she can go to be by herself. |
With our Australian Shepherd litter, I noticed that Stormie (mommy) wanted to spend a little more time away from them at about 3 weeks. Other than that, she was with them all the time except to go out to potty. Good luck with your new litter! |
To repeat what was said above. Your momma dog, Diva, should be with her 1 weeks old babies 24 hours a day. She will only leave them to eat and use the bathroom. Taking her away from them will stress her and is harmful to the puppies. There is NO WAY to overfeed 1 week old puppies that are nursing from their mother. Underfeeding them will not keep them small or make them weigh less as an adult. Adult weights are determined by genetics. PLEASE put momma with her puppies! |
