Have I created a brat?! HELP! Zeke is 7 months and our first furbaby. I know my husband and I have spoiled him and I think Zeke knows that we would do anything for him. But this past week he just keeps on whinning until he gets what he wants. At first my husband and I would try and figure it out what he wanted but then it just got annoying so we started ignoring him. He would continue to whine until he realized we weren't going to do anything and go into his crate. BUT he still is doing it. Is he going through a stage? Or do we need to be stronger parents? I hope we didn't spoil him too much :confused: |
ugh...... sick that habbit in the butt now!!! Hendrix (my four year old yorkie) does that too..... only he is four and refuses to change his ways. He was my only dog up until a few months ago so he is wayyyyyy too spoiled. He whines at us all the time to play with him and it drives me CRAZYYY!!!!! |
Regretably you'll have to be firmer with him. Odie our 7 month Yorkie was trying it on too, but I cannot abide it and ignored it (Extremely hard to do though). He doesn't do it as much now. Hugs Shirl x x |
This happened to me too when Chewie was around 4 months old. He would always bark and whine whenever he wanted something. Like jump in bed with me or beg for food while we're eating. I didn't want him to get used to that so I would just ignore him, or give him a firm NO. After 2 weeks he realized that barking and whining would not get him anything. He is so well behaved now. He does not bark or whine anymore. Be firm. He will get used to that if you always give him attention everytime he whines. You can do it! :) |
Callie does that but we dont really ignore it and try to figure out what she wants or needs. Shes my baby I cannot stand to hear her cry. |

Rosie is going through the same stage now, she used to be able to get under or into just about every little space available to her, but now at almost 1 year she's too big or I've managed to block off the most worrying places. This she isn't happy about, as she still wants access to off limits areas so will whine and complain. Ignoring her is difficult but neccessary and very tiring, but hopefully she'll eventually she'll figure out its not helping and stop doing it. She's definity in the teenage rebel stage right now, just hope we all survive with our sanity intact. |
Yes, you just need to learn to ignore it, and eventually it should subside. :) Remember, the dog doesn't think he is driving you crazy. He's simply repeating a behavior that was successful in the past. I read an example recently comparing this to pushing the elevator button and taking the stairs. If we push the button and it doesn't light up, do we immediately go for the stairs? No, we keep pushing the button! We try pushing it harder, faster and longer because experience has taught us that pushing the button works (and we don't want to take the stairs). So basically, if whining has worked for a while, he's going to whine even more until he finally realizes it no longer works. Whatever you do, DON'T give in after a long bout of whining, because that will just teach him that he needs to whine for a really long time. Stay strong. :) |
Oh, this brings back memories (from 7 years ago). We spoiled Paris, gave her whatever she wanted, she told us when she was hungry...etc... Now we have our own version of the Yorkie Monster. She even tries to boss other people around when we have meet-ups! For your sanity...don't give in. :p |
That is a very bad habit, I think we have all lived with it at some point but you definetly want to be a tougher parent! When I got ZZ she was kinda shaken up because the breeder was getting older and tired of fooling with dogs (She had parkensons) (Not sure how to spell it) and ZZ was dropped so I spoiled her to make her feel welcome and boy did that bite me in the butt.. She still does it now she'll claw at my foot for WHATEVER it is she wants so change his plans while he is still young! Best of luck to you and your hubby =) |
My oldest is 5 and he still does it. Drives me crazy but I did it to myself. You need to nip it in the bud now. |
