Ear docking
 
I'm thinking it would be best to have Frisco's ears cut off since they are incorrigibly floppy. I think if I used a good kitchen knife or scissors, I could shape them so that the remaining parts will stand up like a perky show dog's should. Seriously, he looks like Dumbo.

Has anyone tried this? Any tips? What do you use, general anaesthetic or local?

Hi, friscomom. I believe you started this thread because you were shocked to learn about tail docking, and you want to provoke a discussion.

Please understand, I do not support tail docking either, and will be very happy when it's finally outlawed in the U.S. However, I don't think this thread is the right way to express your opinion. It's just going to get everyone angry, and possibly result in some suspensions. Just my opinion. :)

Personally, I'd recommend that you ask that admin close this thread, and start a thread in 'Animal Welfare', asking how we can change the laws in the states. I'd be interested to see if there is anything we can do at the local level.

And I love the floppy ears on Frisco. :)

I don't think tail docking is anything like ear cropping, and as you probably know, yorkies ears aren't cropped, terriers usually have perky ears, but floppy ears can be adorable. I'm assuming you don't won't any real advice, but just want to cause controversy . YorkieTalk is a great place, and you will find it really useful if you ever need to have any serious questions answered, I wish you'd give us a chance.

Anyway, it looks like little Frisco just needs the hair trimmed around his ears and not to have them cropped. The weight of the hair actually pulls the ears down. So, get him to a groomer and have them cut the hair.

Hey, I don't want to 'cause' anything, or be 'banned' for addressing a subject that the practitioners are uncomfortable talking about. I would like to influence cessation of an inhumane and needless practice. If people become 'angry', welcome to my world. My adrenalin has been surging since all of this was revealed to me last night, and when it stops the tears start flowing.

I cannot understand how dog 'lovers' tolerate this. Most nations of the world have banned the practice. Hello?

Yes, you are right. I have a long haired German shepherd and was told that because of the extra hair his ears may not stand on their own. Well, now almost 5 years later (what!! he's getting old!), he has one floppy ear and one up ear. I love his look :)

Here at YT, we welcome discussions regarding all sorts of topics, especially those regarding animals :).

My suggestion would be to approach this discussion not in a confrontational manner, which creates an instant barrier to discussion, but instead create an open place/feeling where people might feel comfortable expressing themselves about an issue.
