Bringing home a furbaby at 10 weeks Hi, I'm a newbie with a question. Is 10 weeks an appropriate age for my Yorkie puppy to come home? What is the best age for a puppy to leave their mother? The breeder has told me that my little Oscar is the smallest in the litter & is starting to not be able to stand his own when playing with his much larger siblings. I am assuming she normally keeps her puppies longer. THX!:confused: |
Hi & welcome to YT :) I'm no expert, but I think 12 weeks is best. This gives them more time to learn basic socialization with the mama and the litter. However, I got my Harley at 8 weeks and she's perfect. Just take that into consideration when training because they are definitely a handfull at that age. But SO worth it. Post pics when you can! |
I brought Maddie home at 10-11 weeks and she did fine. I think 12 weeks would be best. Is the breeder worried about him not being able to play with the bigger sibblings, or did they offer to keep her until 12 weeks? |
I think the breeder was worried that he was getting hurt by his siblings. Normally her puppies go home at 12 weeks. |

I also provided lots of chew toys for Harley so she did not chew on MY stuff. Slowly introduce her to things which will be a must down the road.... like grooming. When I was ready to introduce Harley to something, say the comb, I would lay it on the bed and let her "discover" it herself but never force it on her. When she would go near it or sniff it, I'd immediately give her a treat. I did this several times with everything new, before I ever used any of them on her. She was never scared because of this. There's a lot of great advise on this forum. You'll love it and there are so many caring people. Congrats on your new little one. Have a blast and take it one day at a time. |

i got Gatsby at 8 weeks and he was fine i also crate trained him next to my bed so i could be close and he still understood he had to potty on the paper even when he slept in the bed it also helped me know that when the crying stopped he was sleeping peacefully(might not suggest if you are a light sleeper or have to be up early) |
I brought my puppy home at 8 weeks. THe breeder told me to keep him off the floor til he gets his 15 weeks shots. Is that sound or could I put him on the floor sooner. I have him in a play pen right now but I want him to be able to go and play where he wants. |

Schedule! Work with what the breeder does for times, and slowly introduce yours, 15 minutes at a time. Feeding time, bed time, play time... Do this on work days, and weekends as well. My babes all have a long morning, and aft nap, and sleep through the night! But for the first 8 months, they had there naps, even on the week ends, in there quiet place. A tired puppy, will sleep well, make a long walk, or a low-key play time part of your nightly routine, like you would with a child. And even if you have a puppy bed, coil a towel (like a donut) and make a small hole in it. He will feel safe, and cozied, in his crate! Good luck! |
Thanks for your responses. They are very helpful I will start introsucing him to the floor and all that in intervals. I do play with him until he is tired so we both can go to bed and sleep. Now when crating him, what should I do for that being that Im at work monday through friday? Is the play pen the best? What are your suggestions. |
