Displaying strange behavior w/favorite toy
 
My 4 yr old Yorkie, has been displaying some strange behavior with her favorite toy lately. This is all new and never happened in the past. She has a little rubber duck that she has started carrying everywhere. When she lays down she takes extra time to make sure it is neatly tucked in and under her. She is almost to the point of obsession. She will hold it in her mouth and just look at you and whine.

If she can't find it she roams the house room to room looking for it. I also noticed when she goes to eat she will bury it in a blanket in the corner of the couch and then go back to it when she is done. She has never been spayed. Never had puppies. Anyone experienced this or suggestions on what to help her. I am thinking it maybe something maternal, but even when she has been in heat we have never experienced this.

My daughter had a chi that was attached to a tiny stuffed white whale that we brought back from Sea World. She loved it and would keep it with her all the time. I know it sounds strange... but she would even wait by the washer when my daughter washed it. I guess dogs have favorite toys , too!:animal-pa

Pixie is doing the same thing with a plush duck toy made by kong. I have a picture of it with it in her mouth in her album. I am curious what this is. She has to have it in bed with her every night and when she gets up in the morning she goes back in her crate and gets this darn duck. Pixie doesn't whine, but she does carry it with her a lot and when daisy goes to play with it she doesn't like sharing that. Sometimes she will hide it under a blanket or in one of her many dog beds. She also carries around a fleece bone that she got with her napsack from chattiesmom here on YT. I never really thought it meant anything except that she liked the toy. hm Pixie is 5.5 months old. I told my husband I better get a back up with this toy. lol
Maybe it is just a favorite toy, go buy a couple more of the same toy and see what she does. That is what I am going to try.

My little Muffin had a stuffed doggie that I gave to her when I first got her as a puppy. She had it all of her life. It was laundered so many times and threadbare in places, but she loved it and wagged it around all of her life. We called it "Doggie" and she would often take it everywhere she went. If she ever took anything off a table that we wanted back, we would go get her "Doggie" and use it to bribe her to give it back. She would drop whatever she had instantly when she saw you had her "Doggie.":D

Muffin would wait in the laundry when we were washing her "Doggie," too. We always had to sneak it away when she wasn't in there so we could wash it.:)

Reesie will do that with a treat, carry it around, hide it in weird places, take it to bed, attack the cat if it was anywhere near the treat, but not eat it until she was ready and sometimes that was a day or two. Cindy caught on and started to patrol Reesie's hiding places, even rummage through the bed looking for the hidden cookies.

But every day she'll have a different favorite toy.

If this is new for her and hasn't happened before then to me it sounds like a false pregnancy shes using that toy as if it was truly her baby. did it happen after her last heat? one of my females did this before they are mothering a favorite toy. it can get out of hand some times and they can start producing milk as if they really was pregnant, it can last for weeks and she may become very over protective of that toy. try playing with her or doing some thing fun with her to try getting her mind off of it.

I agree with this post. A phantom pregnancy is what is sounds like. I had this happen with my Mitzie , she didn't get as far as producing milk but I know that can happen. I don't think there's anything you can do but ride it out and try to keep her busy and occupied away from the toy.

yeap, we have a lab that did the same thing with my shoe. it was a false preg.

Thanks for all the help. She is driving us crazy trying to figure out if she wants to play or what she wants. Hopefully, it won't last forever. Those darn little sad eyes looking at me like I am supposed to understand exactly wants she wants.
