Reasonable Price for a Puppy
 
Hi Guys. I'm looking for a new puppy. I had to put my beloved Kringle to sleep last summer. I'm nearly ready for a new fur baby.

What is a reasonable price to pay? I know there are all kinds of prices out there. I do not want to breed or show. I just want a healthy puppy that will be a little bit on the larger size (6 to 9 pounds).

I would like to find a reputable breeder who breeds for health and personality.
Yorkies are worth an arm and a leg but I don't have those to spare just now. :D

Price is always the last thing on my mind. I feel if you buy from a responsible breeder who breeds to the standard, along with great breeding ethics, you will always win. Health is number one in my book!:)

I think around a thousand give or take a hundred or two is a good price to pay

I am with the lady up there. Price never crosses my mind! Health and fun furbabiness is always first on my list.

The search is always fun! Enjoy it and take your time! =)

I agree, I think finding the best breeder you can is so important; one that does health testing and knows the line can eliminate many health risks. Surgery for one leg to correct a Luxating Patella will cost a minimum of $1600.00. Many dogs have to have two knees done, and finding a breeder who checks for this and knows her line will help increase your chances of not having a dog that needs the surgery. Because Yorkies are such a popular dog, breeders are breeding them purely for profit, and don't care if the puppies that they produce are sickly, so look for a breeder who is not profit motivated. Breeders who show are not being frivolous, they are trying to see if their dogs meet standard, and believe that only those dogs that meet standard should be bred. You can help improve the breed, by only supporting those breeders who are breeding to improve the breed. Cost should not be the primary focus, check out their breeding program first.

People don't realize that often you can get a puppy from a show breeder who has done thorough genetic screening and health testing for as much or even less as some puppies from backyard breeders and online puppy mills/brokers.

Do your research and carefully select a breeder who follows all the YTCA guidelines.

Getting a "bargain puppy" can cost you a fortune in vet bills over its lifetime.

The breeder you choose is absolutely important! Bloodlines will effect the price and I think the prices vary by regions of the country.

To answer your question, anywhere from 600 to 2000 dollars is a reasonable range. We paid 800 for our little Zena, but she is not a "show quality" dog. We don't intend to show her anyway so it does not matter to us. Good luck with your new pup when you get it.

I didnt want to show or breed, just a happy pet, so instead of paying 2000 to 2500 on a yorkie from a great breeder I had been speaking with... I paid 1100 for one from a BYB.

I have spent THOUSANDS, way too many to admit publicly on her healthcare... all things that likely could have been prevented with good breeding.

I WOULD NOT trade my girl for anything today but in the future I WILL spend the money upfront to buy from a good breeder, NO MATTER the cost.

Just because a Yorkie puppy cost more, or less, does not implicate a tendency to be sickly. Sure, a show dog from a champion pedegree will cost more than a "regular" puppy; but all dogs get sick regardless of breeding. Zena came from a breeder who's dogs had an accidental litter; thus the "low" price for her. Zena is a very healthy, happy, and energetic young lady! Good luck in your search your bundle of joy!

Exactly! The odds of getting a puppy who carries "genetic time bombs" are much, much higher than a puppy from a reputable breeder who knows her lines are free from genetic problems many generations back and carefully screens all dogs she plans to breed with extensive health testing.

You are taking a huge gamble on the future health of your Yorkie if you don't get a puppy from a reputable breeder.

I strongly disagree! Reputable breeders test for numerous things prior to breeding in hopes of breeding two healthy dogs. If one is not up to par, it does not make the cut. Reputable breeders also ensure they are breeding to the standard. The higher price tag reflects the breeders hard work and dedication to the breed, it is not cheap to champion a yorkie! All dogs do not get sick!

The OP's question was about a reasonable price for a puppy, not whether to buy from a YT approved breeder! A 3000 dollar dog can be, or can get just as sick as a 600 dollar dog. Any dog can get sick at any time, the price paid does not buffer that possibility one bit. I see horror stories from "good breeders" here on YT quite often. That speaks volumes! You delude yourselves into thinking your 3000 dog is a "better dog". LOL! Get over yourselves, PLEASE!

Why not just answer the OP's question instead of giving a lecture on where to by a puppy? :rolleyes:

WOW, you need a little bit more education! Yes dogs do get sick, but not ALL dogs do! I am speaking about liver shunts, luxating patellas. Things we test for before breeding! I am not talking about a case of fleas! That is pure owner default! Tell me where you find a YT member on this site complaining about health issues from a reputable breeders puppy? Again, I said REPUTABLE! I don't delude myself at all, I KNOW! As for the ops question, I was the first to answer! Take a look for yourself!

Most of the $3000 dogs do not come from reputable breeders. The reputable breeders can and do sell for a lot less then the "$3000 teacup puppy-mill" dog.

I think the point people are trying to get at is price does not say everything about the quality of a puppy..... the breeder's practices do. You are not going to find a quality puppy for $300 but you don't have to spend $3000 either.


I'm kind of sickened by your ignorance on this matter. :(

Please look at my post above. It's not just about the price or you get what you pay for. Look at the breeder, their practices, do they health test? The health test are more then just a routine check-up.

There is so much info on this board, just read the old threads on how to find a good breeder. It's so important. All the best. :)

You state you want a healthy puppy, and you have received some excellent advice on finding one-find a reputable breeder. Buying a dog doesn't follow the "You get what you pay for rules". You can find some ridiculously high priced for puppies from mills. :rolleyes:

I promise spending time finding an excellent, reputable breeder, will give you more time with your pup.:) Good luck in your search.
