Second home dogs Hey, I'd love to hear any stories from those of you who adopted older yorkies, how it was for them all in all, the rehoming, how long till they seemed comfortable, etc. ? |

I adopted Max last year from a rescue group. I don't think he had too hard of a time adjusting. He came in, sniffed every corner and made himself quite comfortable. He ate right away with no problems. They told me he was crate trained, but I doubted it since he hated going in there. He initially had an accident or two, but he was fully housetrained. It wasn't long before I let him stay downstairs (tile floor) while I went to work. He took a little time to trust me & my daughter and now he's a lovebug and is constantly in my lap. He had some aggression issues but I think it was related to him not completely trusing us. When I would leave for work, he would bark and cry. He stopped after a few weeks though. |
i got mine when she was 5. she attached to me right away and follows me everywhere. at first, she shook alot especially with new people but she has calmed right down and is far less anxious. she is housebroken for the most part, i leave a puppy pad in the ex-pen if shes left alone for a few hours, she uses it but rarely. shes definitely a one-person kind of pup. she was a show dog so bathing her is super easy, everything has been she is perfect i couldn't have asked for better. i am thinking about maybe adding a puppy but after having billie it would probably be really hard, she just seems so easy in comparison. shes 5 lbs so she seems like a youngster anyway. she definitely needs her own safe spaces (ex-pen with a bed in it, and a soft crate). the crate is on my bedside table with the flap down and she slept in it for the first few weeks, but now she starts off in there and then joins me in bed and sleeps right beside me. the lady i got her from has puppy sat for me once for 5 days and it went really well, at first i thought she would be confused or scared i wasn't returning but i have learned with her that she is fine with the familiar, changes have to come slowly but its been great. if you are considering adding an older dog to your family, i would definitely say in my expereince it has been a dream come true. |
I took Tara when she was 16 months old and she is such a joy. She adjusted so well and loves everyone. I took another at 10 months old and she is the dog from hell! I am not sure if she never adjusted or she was always like that and that is why they rehomed her. She is so nervous and agressive. She starts fights with the other girls all the time. My daughter is the only one that can do anything with her so she keeps her in her room most of the time. That is the only place she is happy. |
We got Kona last August when she was 7. It only took a couple of days for her to trust us and now it is like she has always been here. She was trained to go outside and we only had 2 "accidents' with her and they were the first week. We can now go for a few hours and feel fine leaving her home alone. She is crate trained and we used it for the first while. Now she just sleeps in a soft bed by me at night. She will go in the crate when she goes to my sister's or my parent's if we go out of town. She is the best little (10 pounds!) dog ever! I too think about getting another but Kona has been so good I don't know if another would work out as well. |
I have adopted two adults aged 5 and 7, both adapted differently based on their personalities and past. I also foster dogs. They all seem to take a month or so to adapt to our home and within 6 months they really develop into their true little selves. |
Maddie was a year when i adopted her at a rescue-i would say it took about 3-4 weeks for her to come around and trust. I think she just needed to know she was loved and wasnt going anywhere. once she knew this was here home i seen improvement on a daily basis. it took longer for her to come around to my husband--since a man wasnt to nice to her before. but she loves him to death now. i had almost bought a puppy a few months before i got maddie, but i decided with my schedule a pup probably wasnt going to be the best choice for me. i later found maddie and i feel in love--and at a year old, much easier to train--she was and is so eager to please-- at 17 months now--she is my spoiled baby. even my older kids that have moved out say-Geese mom you act like shes a real kid-----i say she is--shes the good one---hahahaha |
These stories are heartwarming. Thank you for sharing. |
