Yorkies and Apartments Hello everyone! I am moving out of my house soon, I currently live with my parents, and I am going to bring my yorkie Penny with me. She is unaltered/3.5lbs/9months. I will be working 8-12 hour shifts at a hospital in the San Francisco Bay area, and living in a 750 sq ft apartment. I plan on keeping Penny gated in the kitchen while I'm at work. Is this a good idea? Also, I want to get her a playmate but I'm not sure if I want another yorkie or not? Do you all think it is best to get another yorkie or a dog of a different breed? Any advice is welcome! |
You should look at getting an xpen to confine her to one room...does she use pads or go outside? 12hrs is a long time for her to hold it... during the day make sure she has plenty of toys to play with..also consider leaving a radio or tv on...it works for my lil one... With regards to getting a 2nd dog...IMO you should hold off...you don’t sound like you're ready and I've learned from this site not to get another dog unless you're REALLY ready...don’t get another one just to keep the other dog happy...two dogs is a lot of work and double everything...food, toys, vet, etc.... Congrats on your move to SF...I live about 20 min away from the city... Keep us posted :) |
I live in a 780 sq ft apartment, and Couver does great here :) I just make sure he goes on lots of long walks daily. As for the second dog, I would also recommend that you wait until you are not working such long shifts... 8-12 hours is a long time, and to introduce a new dog to that routine right away would be difficult. As for the kitchen, I have heard of dogs chewing on cupboards, so if you do not want to worry about that, I would recommend an x-pen in the kitchen. Apartment living is great, as long as you make sure she gets lots of attention when you get home and she is walked plenty. |

Congratulations on your move to San Francisco - best to you and Penny! San Fran is a very special city!!! |
Yep! They will chew cabinets! The day I got Pixel his ex pen was the day I came home from work and saw what he had done ;) I had only had him 2 days at that time LOL |
I just moved back in with my parents, to their apartment in LA. Kaji is doing OK with the transition. I did most of what the others have mentioned. What I would recommend is, if your baby loves to play fetch, choose a long hallway, or leave a nice long clear path where you can toss the ball. Kaji loves playing fetch in the hallway! I toss the ball from the living room down to my parents bedroom (the farthest distance) and he could do this till my arm is sore! |

Good luck with your move ! I had to move from a house to an apartment after my husband died and was pretty freaked about it. My stipulations were - GROUND floor - fenced in patio ....and close to work so I didn't have to commute and be gone long hours. I had to wait for 1-1/2months to move into the apt I'm in but it has just what I needed. My girls are older so I can trust them in the house alone - meaning they don't have to be confined but I did find having a fenced in patio is a huge plus. I have outdoor carpet out there and can just open my back door and they're able to use it... plus I have a pad in the house. I walk them everyday after work so they do get to be 'out' but it's not the same as having a yard. I know they miss running around and when you're in an apartment they can't run free ......That was the hardest part getting used to being in an apartment - no yard. |
I would recommend you potty train inside. I leave but let both my babies roam the living room and kitchen. I'm not gone that long though, also if you plan on getting a second one I recommend you get one that's grown a puppy needs allot of attention especially in a new environment. |
heey welcome to CA!! =) It's been raining crazy on and off...I would suggest you to puppy proof an area like no carpet nor anything Penny can get her teeth on. When they get bored (esp 8-12 hrs) she will find something to chew! Also make sure she doesn't have separation anxiety because she can cry SO loud people think she is being abused. (this happened to me a couple years back with my chorkie) I had to work and confined him in an area with radio on. I would also suggest not getting another dog because I did that for my first yorkie and it was more work than I thought! I thought they will play and I can just study and stuff but it's the opposite! You have to introduce them and supervise them because they fought in the beginning. Get another one when you have time to take care of her, after all, it is another puppy and one puppy is a bundle of work. Hope this helped... Good luck! |
I say ex-pen and did I say ex-pen again!! lol Serious though it will keep her safe and you wont have to worry what she is getting into while you are gone. I hope all goes well with your move and congrats to you on your new place! |
When I lived in my apartment during school I was gone about 5hrs per day and because she was so young (and I was so scared about her getting hurt while I was away) I kept Bella in her exercise pen and she was trained to go potty indoors. It worked out great! She had enough room to nap, play, and potty. So she was a happy girl and I had my peace of mind. I hope everything goes great with your move. :) |
