Just got home with my new Yorkie and...I've got a question Hi there. I stumbled across this site late last night while I was doing some last minute research before my Fiance and I went and got our new pup this morning! He's a 12 week old Male (obviously) and weighs about 2 1/4 pounds. I got him from a breeder and he's used to being around other pups until now. He is the only dog in our household and he has spent the better part of the day just laying in his kennel. I was just wondering is this normal? I got him to take a couple bites of food and have had him outside twice to go potty but I'm just really suprised at his behavior and want to make sure that there isnt something wrong that I'm missing. He was really happy when I had him outside but once back inside all he wanted was the inside of his kennel? Thanks for any help/info you can provide. Robert |
Its normal for puppies to be sluggish when they leave their litter mates and first homes. Whenever I take my puppy anywhere, he'll sit in his carrier and avoid coming out for awhile. Luckily for me, all three of my dogs had no trouble coming home and adapting. They all acted as if they owned the place almost right away. :) We bought this stuff to put on the dog food when Maddie came home from the breeder, it helps their stomachs and makes them want to eat. You might check it out on the internet. Its normal and hopefully your puppy will adjust quickly and it won't be a problem. Try to get him to eat and drink his water. Good luck! |
Carter was extremely bashful his first few days that he was with us. He too was used to being with several yorkies and was making the adjustment to our home. With each day that passed, he became more comfortable and began to venture around his new home. He didn't eat much his first 48 hours. I continually had food and water available for him. Carter was almost 6 months old when we got him. |
well I'm feeling better already! Thanks! I figured that it was just his being a little overwhelmed being today was a pretty busy day for him. The good news is I can hear him munching on some food right now, which means mustered up enough courage to leave the crate on his own. Thanks again! Robert |
Just thought of another question. He's had his first two shots and is going in for his third this week. Is it safe to give him a bath at this point or do I need to wait until he's had all his shots? Thanks Again, Robert |
I would hold off on the bath, as it sometimes stresses them out. Being in a new environment is overwhelming enough without the bath. I always suggest to new parents to wait a few days to allow them to acclimate into your home it may be stinky but worth the wait. www.simplyyorkies.com |
Amber was so shy when we brought her home. I would put her in her kennel at night and she would not want to come out the next morning :( . She would curl up in the corner of the back of her cage. That probably lasted 5 days. Now I cant get her to go in her cage. So she sleeps with us :p . |
