but my fiancé wants one I thought it would be a good idea to Join here before making such a big decition.
tell you what I like the look of a baby yorkie with the short hair but I don't like when their hair grows..

I mean I know the pup would grow but I just would like to get him groom like that would that be possible or it would never look like that when grown even if groomed?

Also if we want the dog to be 3lbs when full grown about what weight should he be when 11-13 weeks?
I know it's not for sure but it would be nice to have something to look for.

You can keep it in a puppy cut. The groomer will know what to do. As for size there is no guarantee how big they will get. Just a piece of advise but the smaller dogs have lots more health problems and people call them teacups just to get more money for them.

Hi & Welcome to YT! You came to right place to find out all about yorkies! If you are wanting short hair, you will have to take to the groomers. Your groomer can cut hair to the length of your likings. As for weight, we can estimate but no guarantees. Is there a reason why you want one that small?

Yep. My husband was not a yorkie guy until we got Jack. Now we have 3 and soon to be 4. He even rides Jack on his motorcycle. They steal your heart and you don't care who likes it or not. LOL

Heck my DH wants to keep all the new babies! He is worse than a kid in a candy store when it comes to yorkies!;)

Hi and welcome to Yorkietalk. First of all, you have to remember that a dog is a living-breathing thing; it's not all about looks and how cute they are. Yorkies take a lot of care and training and can drive even experienced dog owners up the wall. It's really a lot like having a real baby. To answer your question, yes, you can keep a yorkie looking like a puppy easier than just about any breed. Many yorkies have smaller noses and this helps keep them looking young. Many people also keep their hair trimmed in a puppy cut, and this too helps to keep them looking young. However, don't be surprised if your "eyes" mature and you like different looks later down the line.

Concerning wanting a 3 pound adult dog, you should probably buy a dog that is one year old or more, if that's important to you. Breeders who say that their dog will only reach 3 pounds are probably lying to you. Some breeders will claim that the dog is 12 weeks when it's really only 6 weeks so that you think it will be small. I really don't recommend someone looking for a dog under 4 pounds, you will have many more joint problems and teeth problems with the smaller dogs, and this can become extremely expensive. I recommend you find the best breeder possible, one who really looks for health of the dog first, and one who will stay in your life to help you with different problems that you will encounter. The standard size for yorkies is 6 pounds and below, so any breeder that breeds to standard should have a small puppy. Check out both parents, in person, don't take the breeders word for this. Good breeders will not breed a female less than 5 pounds due to health risks, but dads can be smaller. They often do sell females whose adult weight will be less than 5 pounds because they don't believe in breeding them. The weight at 12 weeks is approximately 1/2 the full-grown weight. This varies, so any breeder guaranteeing a certain weight is probably lying. Good breeders will not sell a dog, until they are a minimum of 12 weeks and most will wait until the dog is 2 pounds. You have to remember that a 5-pound dog is a very small dog, smaller than a newborn baby.

Ok, you'd like the puppy to look like a puppy forever? I think that's why alot of people fall in love with Yorkies but... all dogs grow up. :D If it's the color that you're talking about (black & tan) that is the normal coloring for all Yorkie puppies but most change colors for the next couple of years. You will see some that do stay black & tan, like my girl, but that's not the breed standard so that's not what the breeders are trying to reproduce.

As for the haircut - that's much simpler to do. It's just called a "puppy cut". Most groomers know how to do it. Just make sure to tell them not to shave the body too close.

The weight that you're asking about is not an ideal weight, especially with a small child around. I'm assuming that's your baby in your avatar.

The standard Yorkie should weigh 7 lbs and under and most would say 5-7 lbs is ideal. There is NO way to tell how much your Yorkie is going to weigh. Unfortunately, the breed has been bred with so many different and out of standard dogs, that it's become almost impossible to know what your puppy will end up weighing. As with any dog, there will be a smaller or larger one in each litter. Being born small doesn't mean it's going to stay small. The best way to tell how big your dog will be is to buy a full grown one. :D The next best way is to get to know a breeder who has been breeding for many, many years and knows her "lines" and then you might have a good idea of what's to come. :p

Yorkie puppies will change throughout the growing process. Adults rarely look like they did when they were a puppy. Here is my Bentley as a puppy and now.

I just want to correct my post I said that standard is 6 pounds and below, cj125 is correct, the official standard is "must not exceed 7 pounds". Good luck in your hunt, yorkies are about as close to a human baby as you can get. They really have a mind of their own, and unlike most dogs who live for their master and want to please you all the time, a yorkie expects you to please it!
