different sizes of Yorkies I bought a Yorkie puppy when she was already 4 months old. She seems fairly small. Is there a teacup, toy, miniature and Yorkie, If so, how do I know which I have, I am pretty sure she is not a teacup, so could she be toy or miniature, Does this differenetation need to be made to show if I should decide to do so, |
If I understand right.....a Yorkie is a Yorkie no matter what size it is. There isn't such a thing as a 'teacup.' All puppies look 'teacup' when they are young. That word is used by unethical sellers to get you to buy their puppies. Many, here on YT, have been told that they have a 'teacup' and end up with a Yorkie that weighs 12 or so lbs. General rule is: double the weight of the puppy at 12 wks. and add one pound. It seems, though, that anyone who has a Yorkie that turns out much larger than expected adores their 'teapot' size Yorkie. As for showing that is out of my range of expertise (assuming I even have any.:)) Might want to post that in the thread about showing dogs. ~Joanne~ |
A yorkie is a yorkie. :) The breed standard states not over 7 lbs, but they can get larger than that of course. If showing, they usually like at least a 5 lb girl :) |
Yorkies are a toy breed. They are not classified by size, such as the Poodle; Standard, Minature, and Toy. The standard says not to exceed 7 pounds. But, in every litter you can get oversized and undersized. Throw away the growth charts, the yorkie growth pattens are very dependent on the line in which they are decendent from and even then it's a guesstimate. The only thing you can depend upon is that the Yorkie breed will make a liar out of you everytime. No reputable breeder will guarantee a puppies size at adult hood. The only way you can be sure of what you will get is to buy an older puppy, one that is about 7 months or older, it's what most exhibitor/breeders do when looking for a dog that will be taken in the ring to Champion. I prefer my girls between 6 and 7 pounds with nice medium bone. Less problems when it comes to breeding. |

The bigger they are the more there is to love. I've one at 1.8 kilos, one at 2.50 and Odie is a big boy at 10 lb. Hugs Shirl x x |
Yeah, growth chart is usually not right. My girl was supposed to be under 2lbs by the chart but she is 2.5lbs now. I heard sometimes double their weight at 4 month works as well. |

Mine have all stayed under what the growth chart stated. I had a female that by the growth chart was looking at 4-4.5 lbs and she's almost 9 mos. at 3.2 and is spayed. I've told every family they won't exceed 4 lbs b/c all the lines mine came from are small. But we still go by the growth chart to be on the safe side. They all have been about 3-4 lbs full grown. There's been only one per litter that has been 4 lbs. The others all 3-3.5 lbs. taking after their daddy. Everyone just adores their babies! I keep in touch with everyone too! |
Welcome to YorkieTalk William! :D Congratulations on your little girl! :aimeeyork |

What age is considered "adult" for Yorkies? My baby is 9 1/2 months old and weighs 2.7 pounds. His mom and dad weigh 3 and 2 1/2 respectively. Thanks |
