Advice Please! I have been thinking about getting a small dog for some time now, and the Yorkie is a breed that has caught my eye more than once!!! I was hoping for some advice...I work full time (12 hour shifts), and was wondering if there was a Yorkie parent out there who has experience of working full time and having time for their canine friend. Would you recommend owning a Yorkie while working? Thanks |
I have had my Jersey since May and I was concerned about working FT but it has all worked out and he adapted just fine. Yes in a perfect world I would love to be a stay at home yorkie Mom but it's just not possible at this time. I'm considering getting a second, why not!!!:) |
It'll probably rougher on you than the Yorkie. I work an 8 hour day & go home at lunch time to be with my Yorkies. I hate to leave them alone for any amount of time. |
I work full time too. I am gone about 10 hours a day, with the commute. I can not wait to get home to my Bonnie. I have a son in college that comes and goes during the day. 12 hours is a long time when you are trying to potty train. And they can be hard to potty train. Could you come home for lunch? And when you come home tired after 12 hours, are you willing to put in 2 hours right away to walk and play? Cause your baby will be all over you, nonstop (not a bad thing:)) after being alone for so long. Maybe even consider an older dog that is out of the puppy stage. I don't think they require as much constant attention. Good luck with your decision, If you get a yorkie it will change your life forever, for the better. But something a lot of people forget, it can be hard and overwelming at first. Especially if you have never had an inside or small dog before. This is a great site to learn all about the yorkie breed before you buy, and come with your problems and issues and happy talk after you buy. Be sure to check out how to purchase your pup = not buy from a pet store or puppy mill, etc. |
I work from 8.30 - 3 and I refuse to go on courses so I can go home at lunchtimes to be with my baby lol |
If you're determined to get a yorkie, working 12+ hours a day, I would suggest you get a yorkie that is past the puppy stage and is house trained already. You might consider a rescue yorkie as most of them are not puppies. I don't think most yorkies (especially puppies) would thrive being alone more than half their waking hours. |
