Huge Yorkie Well today I got the best call I could receive. Our local humane society called to let us know they had a 8 month old Yorkie for adoption. We had been on a waiting list. Well this little guy is huge. At least I think for a Yorkie. He is 13 inches long, neck is 12 inches around and the paperwork says he ways 7 1/2 pounds. But he feels like he weighs more. He looks pretty tall too. I have many questions. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. We just got our other yorkie 9/17 and he is doing really well. But boy does he bark at Ozzi. Dolce I guess will get used to him. He is probably being protective of his territory. * At 8 months will this be his adult height and weight? * How do I get our first puppy to get used to the new addition? * Is it normal for him to have such bad breath at 8 months? * I thought Yorkies were usually under 8 pound and 12 inches long at the most??? I am sure I will have many more questions but that is all I can think of now....lol We are so excited. He is already attached to me. It says he is is good with kids. We have a 4 year old. Ozzi already tried to bite him. So we will also see how the next week goes with that. Aidan was just trying to pick him up to put him on the couch? Any help or info would be fantastic :) |

Bender weighs 4lbs, but my mother has 2 male yorkies (Simon and Carrick) who weigh 13lbs and 8lbs...and even though I often call Simon by the nickname Tubby, just to be funny (and because he is overweight), it's just a normal thing that yorkies vary in size. Since he is from the Humane Society, maybe the place he lived before you fed him some extremely fattening foods he shouldn't have eaten? Just a suggestion. If you think he looks overweight talk to a vet about the possibility of putting him on a slimming (yet healthy) diet. |
Congrats on the new member of the family! I think they come in all sizes and I know on here there are many with larger yorkies myself included. Teddy is about 12 inches long and he fluctuates between 8 and 9 pounds and he is 9 months old today. I love this size yorkie! They are still small dogs but they aren't so fragile. When he was little I was a basket case that he would get hurt or stepped on and now I can hug him with out thinking I will break him. I like having more of him to love... |
toby is around 13.............. 7.5 isnt "huge" for a yorkie........lol.... lenora (browniesmom) knows that for a fact! ;) |
Do you have a picture of him? |
Ozzi doesn't look overweight just not your average lap dog yorkie..lol Of course Dolce is 11 weeks and 2.8 pounds..lol Ozzie is supposed to be a pure breed. He has long legs too. He is 10 inches tall. I measured from his butt to his hind leg. The other issue is how long will it take for Dolce to accept our new family member. He also isn't potty trained completely. Is that normal for an 8 mo pupppy?? Any tips on that?? |
Bender wasn't fully potty trained at 8 months...in fact, I still have to watch him, even though he's 2 and is good 98% of the time. If I notice him sniffing around I have to ask him where his leash is, and he gets excited and waits to go outside. In my experience, I've had a harder time potty training male dogs, because they are chronic leg lifters ;) As far as pooping goes, it has gone much easier. The only time Bender refuses to poop outside is when it's raining, and then he goes next to the toilet, so it's not too bad. I wouldn't worry too horribly about him not being fully potty trained, since change of place sometimes affects that as well. You may want to attempt to crate train him, probably the best method, especially if he is just completely confused about where to potty. |
Thank you for the tips. I will give that a try. I also have wee pads. I will post pictures once I get them developed. The previous owners gave him a funky hair cut on his head and around his ears. I am still amazed at how tall he is...lol I am making an appointment for the Vet tomorrow so we will see what he weighs for sure..lol |
Congratulations on your rescue puppy. He sounds great! |
Again, I believe they just come in all shapes and sizes. I consider Teddy to be very leggy and so I just checked and he was 9 inches tall so I am picturing that your new baby must be pretty similiar in size to my little guy. As your other one grows he won't seem as different as comparing them in size now. Also in regard to the potty training. While not being potty trained at 8 months isn't uncommon he could just also be regressing because of the change in his life. It seems with Teddy anytime something disturbs him he reacts by regressing for a good week or so until he feels safe again. At any rate size aside your so lucky to have found a new baby in the way that you did. Enjoy....I am so jealous! |
Thank you so much. I am excited. But housetraining is going to be fun. lol :) |
Congrats on the new family member...I bet he sure is happy to have a forever home! |
I'm so glad you're giving a rescue a great home. I'm just partial to rescued babies and think they make the greatest pets. |
Bentley weighs 12 lbs on a "skinny" day so I wouldn't exactly call yours huge, LOL :p And I think there are a few on here that are a little bigger than that. Still small to me:) |
