Ear BooBoos I brought Edgar home from the groomers this week (he has a shnauzer cut). now i'm noticing inside the tips of his ears are some small booboos. they seem to be getting worse. it's almost like a human scrape. it's not a huge wound but it's sort of crusty and gross (not pussy tho) i think i noticed b/c his hair is so short now. i think our lab may be chewing on them (he chews on hers!) but i haven't seen her do it. i dont' think he could be doing it himself. so, 2 questions to all my yorkie assistants out there 1. is it safe to clean with peroxide (tho he might hate it) 2. can i put bitter apple on his ears to discourage Ganja from using his ears as a chew toy? any other info is helpful |
are you sure it is the other dog? there have been plenty of instances where a groomer will cut a dogs ears with clippers and actually cut the skin  we have always used peroxide on cuts with out dogs, but make sure the peroxide isnt injested because it could induce vomiting |
i did notice some other places where he is cut (i'm not taking him there again) but they dont' seem to be acting the same way. it is only in his ears that it's a bit "crusty." thanks for the help! |
the ears are supposed to have a lot more "little vains" in them, i cant say for sure because i am not there to see, but the crustyness is usually a scab (which means that it is healing) is this the crustyness that youre talkign about? I have heard of other reasons that dogs have these crusty sores on their ears, and that is flies...... but since you got him back from the groomer i think that the blame probably lies with them Where else on teh body is cut besides the ears????? Which cut did you ahve them do ?? the puppycut? or just a trim? |
he has a bit of a scrape behind his jaw, near his ear. i got him a shnauzer cut thinking it was a cute look, but i miss my fluffy puppy. last time they had him, he had a smooth/shaved body and a ?westie? head w/no problems. but reading about the earstading, i had them trim his ears to see if they would stand. not that that was a big deal, but i thought i'd try. i take my larger dog to these people and they treat her like one of their own, so i thought it would be ok for edgar. i feel they could still do our lab (she's a wash n go!) but i need to shop around a bit more for someone for edgar. it may be they got a bit close on the ears then. |
Oh, yes, the ears really bleed a lot if they are cut. Poor baby. :( |
Hmmmmmmmmm I don't think I would use bitter apple on his ears. I would make a vet visit and let them check it out. Just to be on the safe side! :) |
hey everyone. thanks for the great advice. i went ahead and bought him a headcone from petsmart. the scratch behind his jaw just wouldnt' heal. then i discovered he was scratching EVeryThinG! it became really gross. his ears and head are almost completly healed. but he looks funny with that thing on. i do give him breaks from it for about an hour but then he's back to scratching. take care! tina and edgar |
I don't have any suggestions I'm sorry. I had a question though...... OT but your dogs name Ganja.....Is that from Ganja the herb that you smoke...marijuana? Is that how your dogs name is pronounced and is this the same meaning? I find it hilarious if it is. I had a cat named that when I was in college but she was named after the herb. |
