Oh what a disaster! Hello all. First I want to thank everyone who responded to my first thread and welcomed me so warmly. Your comments and replys were all very comforting. Well, the plot thickens. My mom bought teddy 15 days ago. We were concerned about his ears so the breeder took $95 off the price so we could have him checked out at the vet. She also said we could have a week before she would cash the check. This was two Saturday's ago. I told my mom that Banfield Vet was open inside of Petsmart on Sunday so why doesn't she just go get him checked out there instead of waiting until Monday to go to our normal vet, seeing that we were very anxious to find out if he was OK and in good health. They said he was a perfectly healthy pup and gave her some drops for Teddy's ears. Well, yesterday she decided to continue vet care with our normal vet and to get the rest of his shots. They of course did an exam on him and said he has LUXATING PATELLA. The poor little fellow is only 5 months old and has serious problems and now so do we. In a nut shell, my mom paid $900 and had one week to get him checked out. She did the following day and Banfield misdiagnosed him. Now the check has been cashed, the breeder is not answering her phone, Teddy needs a $1400 surgery. This breeder must have known. She said she still had him at 5 months because of his personality. Someone else probably had him and returned him because of his problem. I feel so bad because I am the one who showed my mom this ad and convinced her to go to Banfield. Teddy is so sweet and we have fallen in love with him. Unfortunately money is pretty tight for both of us. We called the breeder and left her a message saying if she gave us back the $900 we would come up with the extra money to have the surgery. I asked her to please do the right thing before we contact the AKC and take her to small claims court. Also I think Banfield vets should be responsible for making this situation right as well. If they have done their job correctly we would have known about this problem the very next day, taken him back to the breeder, gotten the check back and not been looking at paying for a $1400 surgery two weeks after meeting this little pup. What do you think? Can anybody tell us what we should do? Please let us know. Thank you. Teddy'ssister. |
That's really bad news! I've heard bad things about Banfield. :thumbdown I'd contact a lawyer. Find out what can be done not only to the breeder but the Banfield as well. With their misdiagnosis, it's caused you to keep a dog that has medical problems...sorry, kids are in here and it's hard to concentrate. Anyway, like I said, I'd contact a lawyer and find out what kind of case you have against both. |
I hope the Breeder calls you. I would take the report from the second vet and show a copy to the first vet. They should work something out with you. Not sure what AKC can do, but The Vet Should do something. Maybe there is a site you cvan post the Breeders name on, If she isn't going to call back. Good Luck! |
That is terrible. I don't think its unreasonable what you are asking the breeder to do. She SHOULD give you back your $900 to go towards this baby's operation. If she is a reputable breeder, she will do just that. what are her options.. take the dog back and try and sell it to someone else without disclosing this puppys condition? I would keep trying to reach her and see what she says. |
I read your story and that is just terrible!!! I went to Banfield once for an emergency visit on a Saturday becasue my regular vet was in surgery and they sent me there and I was less than pleased :thumbdown Do you have an update on what's going on?? Have you made a decision on what to do??? |
I can imagine being upset. I do want to let you know that a lot of vets do not check for LP. It is very common in Yorkies and other small breeds, such as the Boston Terriers, Toy Poodles and a few more. There are like 5 different levels of LP with being born with it the least severe. Do not assume you need surgery. Your Mom's new pup may never experience problems with her pup's LP at all . LP is more of a problem when caused by an injury. Actually the things you need to watch out for are all of the things you need to be cuatious of anyway....jumping off furniture and things like that. Her pup may develop arthritis when it gets older....Yorkies without LP are at the same risk. I would recommend not having the surgery unless it is causing the pup pain. I'm not downplaying it, I just want you to know that you don't need to panic just yet and that hopefully it will never be a problem. Call a few more vets, tell them the breed, the pup's age, and see what they say...you may feel a little better afterward. |
Aww Im so sorry that Teddy was Dx with Luxating Patella. I really hope that the breeder do the rite thing. Please keep us posted. |
Am I very sorry to hear about this. TODAY I would send the breeder a certified letter. Then immediately go back to Banfield and show them your vet's diagnosis. You are probably going to have to take this to court if your breeder doesn't cooperate. Do you think that in light of the circumstances your vet would let you make installment payments so that your Teddy could have his surgery? Rest assured that Teddy will be fine. And your mom knows your heart. This situation was not of your doing. Here's a hug girl. EVERYTHING will work out to your favor. |
Thank you. Thanks to everyone who responded to my thread. You guys are so sweet here. I'm so glad I found you. You don't know how much your responses and support mean to me. As soon as I can I will post a pic of Teddy and update you of all the goings on. Thanks again. Teddy'ssister. |
