After reading a thread in another section, it made me wonder :rolleyes: . what is the importance of registering your puppies? my puppy is akc registered or at least in the paperwork from the breeder there are papers in there but it looks like i have to fill out something and pay a fee. unless i dont understand the paperwork. i dont plan to show him b/c he's to big almost 9 pounds and i've already had him neutered. besides i bought him to be my sidekick which is does soooooo well. would registering be in my best interest? here what i would like to know about the subject.

1. who registers the puppy you or the breeder
2. what does it mean to have papers? (meaning what are they used for ?)
3. how does papers affect prices?
4. whats the backlash for not registering

p.s. I just wanted to get a little information so please educate me on your experiences ....................and ladies please be nice and lets make this a happy informative thread. thanks in advance :)

Ya know, I want to know the same thing. I have not registered Princess and do not plan on showing/breeding, etc. I am so glad you posted on this subject.

I registered Susan just for the snob appeal. I've never had a pure bred dog before and I just wanted to do it.

With AKC...

1. The breeder registers the litter. Puppy registration papers come in at that point. The papers are given to the new owner so that they can register their puppy...pick out registration name, opt to get 3 generation pedigree, etc.

2. Breeders and show people are more interested in having the papers. Breeders...to future register their litters...and show breeders need them for showing.

3. Registered pups will generally run you more than non-registered pups.

4. Unless you meet the criteria in #2 or just want to have the papers there is no backlash. Many people receive the papers from breeders but don't actually ever register their pup.

Ok I'll give your questions a shot!

You both do, the Breeder send in his/her paper work, and you send in your part. The new name of the puppy & naming you the owner. Yes, they charge you.

2. what does it mean to have papers? (meaning what are they used for ?)

Papers are used for Breeding, really just to prove you have a Yorkie.

3. how does papers affect prices?
Most Breeders will charge more if papered, They have to pay for the papers too, that might be why.

4. whats the backlash for not registering

I don't think there is one. As you would be the only one who knows you didn't register. You don't ever use the number unless you are Showing or Breeding.




Now, I am not a Breeder, and I don't Show my baby, So these answers, are only my guess. I'm sure someone else will post. I have three babies, Princess & Mandy are papered, Poncho is not. I love them all the same! :)

I'm not a breeder but maybe this will help.....
1. The breeder registers the litter and you get your papers when you get your pup. Yes, you do have to fill in your information, puppy's official name and pay a fee to have him registered in your name.
2. Papers show ownership, parents names, birthdates etc... They also are needed if you show or breed.
3. Most people don't want to pay big $$ for a pup that isn't registered and will want to know whey they aren't...as most pure breeds are.
4. I really don't know of any backlash for not registering your dog...it's really a matter of preference.

I have a box of AKC papers for dogs that I have had through out my life and I never did anything with them since I never bred my dogs. For Desi, I didn't even bother to send them in and I'm not. She is my pet, she is fixed and I am not breeding her so what do I need these papers for.. :rolleyes:

Papers are really important to some people, mainly for showing or breeding - then they are imperative. Other times it is for the "snob appeal" like Susan's mom said ;) I didn't register Chewy out of laziness but I am not concerned with it because he's just my pet!

sorry i think we were typing at the same time. you have no idea how helpful you've been. i have drove myself nutttts wondering what those papers are for. i called the breeder but she hasn't returned my calls. guess she already sold me the pup. can u explain the diff abt the litter and indiv pup. if she registered the litter and he was in the litter isin't he registered. why would i do it again. if this is stupid just ignore :D

A breeder registers the litter with both parent's AKC numbers, whelping date of litter, etc. The new owners get the puppy registration papers. It's a totally different set of papers from the litter registration papers. The breeder registers the litter...how many females and how many males. The individual owner has these papers so that they can choose the new puppy's name, check of it's coloring. It's a nominal fee of $15 to register the pup.

Gucci is not AKC register. I was given papers from Brazil. I wanted a pet so I really didn't care about the papers. I'm not breeding or showing her. I don't think there is any backlash if you decide not to register your pup. I guess registering their pups is more important for breeders and to show dogs.

thanks for all the input. dont think im going to register now that i understand the point. but if i ever get a another baby and decide to breed i will register. thanks all. ive been on this site allllll dayyyyy. im going to bed now,although im sure ill dream about what i think im missing.hehe

there is a time limit for registration (I believe its 1 year from the date of purchase) then you will pay more for registration. You also take the chance of misplacing the papers, if you reg the kid now and they become important in the future you can always get a duplicate copy from AKC.

I would also like to know the difference for ACA? Dennis is ACA, but I have not registered him yet, nor made up my mind if I will have him neutered! I have to decide pretty quick though because he is starting to mark the furniture and he looks a little to interested in sexual behavior!

AKC is a lot stricter on making people meet the breed standards. Here in kentucky, CKC is the less perferred one. My hubby who has been a breeder of Field Champion Beagles for over thirty years, says guys tell him this about CKC. "If it looks like a beagle they will register it even if it is not purebreed" Please any of you CKC'ers, don't take offense. That is just the way it is here in Kentucky. He was deadset against me buying a CKC Yorkie for those very reasons. Also, here, the CKC's are a lot cheaper than the AKC's. My breeder bought a pup once from someone and didn't discuss the limited registeration thing and ended up with a limited registeration on her yorkie. She gave the pup to her mother who promptly took it to CKC and got it registered. So, in that sense, it worked out. Again, pleasse don't take offense at my husbands discription of CKC dogs. Bottom line is they are just not held to the higher standard of the AKC registration.
