Thor's coloring getting weirder Hi everyone! I haven't posted in a long time, but I thought this was interesting, and wanted to see if anyone has experiences similar. Thor's coat is lighter than almost any other Yorkie I've seen. If I look closely, I can see that his saddle is actually two hair colors, about 4 white hairs for every black one. A few month ago, he scratched off a big piece of his coat (I think flea allergy). It's growing back in nicely -- but it is almost all black! The one other Yorkie I've seen like Thor was even whiter/silver than he, but with these random black streaks. Is this a super-uncommon gene expression? Anyone else ever seen this? :) |
Sounds kinda cool...... |
Welcome back! I was wondering where you had gone. I noticed 3 days ago some black hairs coming in along the back of my lighter colored girl. I'm thinking the color will change and get lighter as the hairs get mature but I really don't know at this time. I'll probably end up with a zebra! :D:D:D |
Hey, I wondered if you were still around. IDK if it's the same type of thing but Ruby's blue area was an almost silver once her adult coat came in. I've noticed the roots are now blacker than they used to appear. Maybe Thor's dark patch will lighten as it grows out? This is totally OT, but why I had thought of you recently. Remember the Temple Grandin book you gave me in the GE? HBO is releasing a movie about her. I thought you might be interested. Loved the book, btw! Temple Grandin (2010) (TV) |
These york'sters do have a fascinating way of changing colors...I just noticed my little Apple, out in the sunshine the other day, and I'm seeing that gold coming through along her back...She's that steel blue, on the back, right now, w/the gold face and legs...I wonder if she's going to be totally gold? Buzz is just over 6 months old, and he's all black and tan/red, but now he's coming through verrrrrrry silver...so much fun :D |
WELCOME BACK!!!! That is very interesting... I have a dark boy with weird head coloring. His muzzle is completely tan, yet the top of his head is gray like an old man, he's got golden ears with black tips. I do believe that weird gene expression of color is very much possible. What else can explain all the different colors that you see in yorkies? |
Hey Stranger! Nice to see you posting. What have you been up to? Thor's colouring sounds really neat. Do you have any recent pics to share? |
Welcome back! I've missed you! I've heard of hair regrowth like this before from a few others on here. However I don't remember any of them coming back on later w/the rest of the story. Ya know, how the hair ended up after a period of time. Hope you can figure it out. |
I guess it makes sense that the hairs could change as they grow back, that's what their puppy hair does as it matures. But who knows, guess it's just another thing to love :) |
My Katie used to be blonde on her head but is now gold. It's nice to have different colours I think. Hugs Shirl x x |
How old is he? I know I had one that was super white on her head. She turned a nice gold after avout 14 months. |
You said he scratched a spot that is growing back in black hair. Sometimes the scratching or injury will damage the skin layers and this causes the hair to come back in black. Over time you will probably see that it will grow in correct as the dermal layers heal. This could take some time and if it's an area that is re-scratched again (such as during high flea times), it may never completely return to normal. |
The weird black hair coming in also happened to my Chachi when he had a skin disorder and chewed off his hair. It did go back to silver later on though |
What a beautiful baby! |
