sires death has me worried Gatsby's breeder called today out of no where i haven't heard from her in a year she told me to take Gatsby to the vet and have blood work done because his sire just died of kidney failure. he had blood work done in july but she said go and have more done and have work done every 6 months because his sire was fine until about a month ago then he went down hill fast she even said she would pay for it she is scared thear was a genetic problem because her house and yard is extreame baby/puppy proof she has a 1 year old granddaughter should i be worried or just wait and see what his necropsy reveles his sire was only 3 years old |

Try to not worry (I know that is silly to even say) but don't look for something that may not be there. Hugs. |
Try not to worry until you know more. I had a puppy I got from a great breeder that had congenital kidney failure at 6 months and the nephrologist said it was just something that happens and that it had nothing to do with the parents or genetics. The parents were both healthy and are still alive. So while unfortunate that the sire passed it may be something that will not affect your baby. I am hoping Gatsby will be just fine. |
thanks i cant help but worry like crazy i called my vet and she said to bring him in during her lunch to get blood she could hear how worried i was she also told me that with his new diet of all home cooked all the time even if thear was a problem we should have plenty of time to treat it his sires necropsy will be day after tomorrow thanks for the support if we dont find anything tomorrow should i still get blood work done every 6 months |
I don't have any advice to give you I just wanted to let you know that we all will be here for you and will praying that your baby is fine. I know it's worrisome but at least the breeder called you to let you know so you can be prepared. (so many bad breeders would never have called and hoped you never found out). Teresa |

Had Gatsby's breeder had bloodwork done before breeding him to make sure he couldn't pass on any genetic condition to his offspring? Was everything normal then? As the others have said, at this point all you can do is wait to see what the necropsy said. Even if his sire did die of a genetic kidney condition, it doesn't mean Gatsby inherited it. Gatsby's been neutered, right? Never sired puppies himself? |
im ashamed to say i dont know what kind of breeder she is i didn't buy gatsby he was a graduation gift so i cant say if she had blood work done Gatsby is not neutered(allergies)but has not sired puppies he is just my baby and thats the way it will stay until the day he dies if it was safe to have him neutered i would have |

Sending prayers and hugs to Gatsby. |
im heading out it the vets now but then i have to go to class so ill let you know what she says when i get home tonight the necropsy will be first thing tomorrow morning. i talked with the breeder she said yes she had blood work done but it did not see the sires problem so she is worried about his babies i found out he only sired two litters and that only equals 5 pups so she was able to get ahold of everybody |
I would say you had a responsible breeder, even if you got your sweetie as a grad gift. Wishing you the best for your little one! |
Gatsby's sire was a Yorkie, right? Mom was a Chihuahua? According to the health survey done by the YTCA, juvenile renal failure isn't that common in Yorkies. Health Survey 2007 |
just back from school the vet said his blood test came back normal and as far as she was concerned i had nothing to worry about we will know more tomorrow after the necropsy no Gatsby is all yorkie my other dogs are half chi half doxie and half chi half sheltie gatsby is the only pure breed out of the six dogs we own |
sorry it took so long to update but the necropsy come back fine they dont know what caused his death but the vet said it sounds more like a household toxin the a genetic organ problem we wear worried about so thanks for your concern and im happy to say we are fine and should remain so |
It looks like you should be able to relax some now. I am glad to see it don't look genetic :) |
I'm so glad they don't think it's genetic, but sad it was a preventable death. |
