Anyone have any advice for a first timer? My name is Ashley. Fenric is my yorkshire terrier's name. He is not only the most adorable thing I have ever seen but the most confusing to someone accustomed to larger breeds. If anyone has any puppy pad training, obediance training, grooming, diet, leash training, general breed, or anything-I-haven't-already-mentioned tips, PLEASE share. I have raised dogs before but they were always over 30 lbs. Any advice anyone has to offer would be great. Thank you. |
1 Attachment(s) Hi Ashley, I love your yorkies name. Do you have any pics to share with us? You have alot of questions. You may want to try searching this website because these topics have been posted and discussed very thoroughly in the past. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you can select to search specific items on "yorkietalk.com" using the Google tool bar. I've attached a pic so that you can see what I mean. W*E*L*C*O*M*E to YT! :) |
Congratulations & Welcome to YT!!! |
Thanks! I honestly hadn't even thought of searching the forum. I put one of his pictures as my avatar. He is cuter in person of course. He is a bit camera/everything shy so pictures of him are a challenge. |
Hello and welcome to YT!! Your baby is adorable! The best thing you can do is just take time and browse the forum. There are TONS of info on everything from housetraining to grooming. Good luck! :D |
HI!!!!!!!! Welcome, welcome, welcome....you're going to LOVE it here, it is simply the best place ever for Yorkies and you will learn a TON:)!!! I do have a few tips for you the I wish I never did, went through etc with my Snickers. 1) If you're planning on crating Fenric at night, PLEASE keep his crate in your room at night time. I was clueless and crated Snickers in our laundry room, all alone, at a new home, with strangers who took him home sleeping in the other room listening to him cry. It breaks my heart to this day that I did that and made him feel so alone. Dogs want to be with their pack, and YOU are Fenric's pack:)!! Also during the day, I recommend you putting his crate where the most action is during the day.:) 2) Please feed him a high quality food & treats. It can increase his life span!! A good website many of us refer to is: Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble I would only feed a food 4 stars and up:) in my opinion. It's a tricky thing with Yorkies, and may take time to find the perfect food, they can be super picky. 3) Please use a harness (one that does not touch the neck) when walking Fenric. Yorkies are prone to collapsed tracheas and collars on Yorkies are only used to hold their tags. I'm sure there is more....but those are the 3 main I can think of now:). Yay for you and Fenric!!! Love the name!!! Hugs- Snick & Viv |
Thanks. Fenric sleeps in our bed but sometimes he wakes up earlier than we do and makes a doggy mess on the floor (which I do not appreciate). Until I finish his shots I am attempting the puppy pads. I have him on Bil-Jac small breed puppy food because he refused to eat the science diet. I will search the food on that site. |
Fenric is a variation of the name Fenrir. Fenrir is a norse wolf monster. It is ironic. |
How old is your furbaby? Lexie will be a year old Thursday and she has been totally house trained for about 1 month now. It was like one day she just got it. The crate was a big help in training her. We did puppy classes at Petsmart which was a great investment! Even though Lexie is 11 lbs she is a picky eater. She eats Royal Canin with chicken bits and sometimes I put yams in it which she loves. She loves little tennis balls to chase and adores chasing squirrels in our backyard. She sleeps with us now, although she used to spend the night in her crate. At first she exasperated me with the house training but this website was a blessing with the knowledge. Good luck! |
Fen is 4 months old. He is good about peeing on his pad, he just poops everywhere else. After going to the pet food analysis site I got from here I learned that the two bags of food living in my bedroom are probably as likely to kill him as fill him. I thought that because Science diet is recommended that it would be healthy for him but a lot of dogs get serious problems from eating it. His breeder had him on science diet before i got him. It might explain why he wouldn't poop the first 4 or so days I had him. The FDA should create an animal food branch this is rediculous. |
Treat him like any other dog and you'll be fine. The problem comes when people start treating their little dogs like children. |
Research Hi...hope you found what you are looking for in our site...if not keep looking and reading they have lots to offer here. Hope to see you posting around here. |
