Any advantage to joining AKC?
 

My little guy has all his papers and stuff, and the breeder told me he can be shown or bred, however he was recently neutered so he'll just be a great pet. That said, is there any advantage to registering him with AKC? I have the application.

Nope- no benefit as far as I'm concerned other than lining an organizations pockets with money.
We've had 6 AKC dogs "with papers" during our lifetime and have never sent in any of the paperwork.

Didn't notice our dogs acting any different because the papers weren't sent in.

The only reason I can see for paying the fee is if you are going to breed or show. We are not interested in either.

Maybe if someone down the line was looking for hereditary ailments.

One of my yorkies is AKC, I decided to register him. I guess it really depends. I think it's important to have the pedigree. (That's the only reason I registered) I'm only planning on having them as pets, but just for my knowledge and assurance - having the pedigree is a plus. It's sort of something I can put in my scrapbook or their special folders.
I treat my furbabies over the top though. I'm a crazy dog woman! :p
MY other yorkie is part of Japan Kennel Club, and I have her pedigree so I have no reason to transfer her over to AKC.

I guess I basically disagree with what everyone else has said. Here's my opinion:
When you register your purebred puppy with the AKC, you are supporting your breed and everything the AKC represents. Every puppy that is registered in the United States is a testament to the importance of the dog fancy in general and the importance of your puppy's breed in particular! Permanently record your dog's place in breed history and support furthered efforts in research and the continued survival of purebred dogs by registering your puppy!Here is a short list of the things that YOU are supporting when you register your puppy:

Kennel Inspections- Kennel inspections ensure the integrity of the AKC registry and monitor care and conditions at kennels across the country. The AKC is the only purebred dog registry in the United States that maintains a systematic and sustained investigation and inspection effort. The AKC conducts approximately 5,000 inspections each year to ensure compliance with standards that support the health, safety, and welfare of dogs and the environments in which they live.

AKC Canine Health Foundation- The Canine Health Foundation (CHF) works to improve the quality of life for dogs and their owners by funding research projects focusing on the genetics of disease, the canine genome map, and clinical studies.

Canine Search-and-Rescue -The AKC supports professional and volunteer canine search-and-rescue (SAR) organizations throughout the United States through its national program, DOGNYSM — America’s Tribute to Search and Rescue Dogs. SAR dogs came into the spotlight after the attacks on September 11, 2001. But few people are aware of how instrumental SAR dogs are in maintaining the safety and security of our communities on a daily basis.
