Now we know what happened to Jasmine I had posted Friday about the scare that Jasmine had given us and didn't know what had happened. NOW, we do. My DH was watching Jasmine today and (not very good) she wandered into the middle guest bedroom (where out daughter-in-law and son have been staying). DH found her eating a piece of chocolate :eek:. Daughter-in-law had a bowl of chocolate in her bedroom. URGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Now, we know what Jasmine got into the other day. I am just so upset. She only ate a little piece. I know I have read on here to give your little one peroxide to make them vomit if they get into chocolate, but how much do you give them? Please advice. I certainly don't want her to go through what she went through the other night. Needless to say I have already spoken to daughter-in-law! Pleas advice re: peroxide. She is 1 year old, weighs 3 1/2 pounds. Thank you. |
Call an ER vet for exact dosage, but I think you'd be safe with about a teaspoon to start. More if she doesn't throw up right away. |
Was it milk chocolate or dark chocolate? It makes a difference. |
When Pixie got into onions in the trash they told me 1 teaspoon and she had weighed 4 lbs at the time, but I would call your vet bc sometimes it can do more damage to their body. I would call the vet ASAP. Oh my gosh these lil ones get into everything. Please call the Vet BEFORE you do anything that is what he is there for. I will say a prayer for jasmine!! |
And how long ago was it? The vet will want to know that as well. |
THere is no use in calling the ER vet because the other day when this happened I asked if it could be chocolate and the vet didn't think so and she did not want me to give peroxide any way. It was milk chocolate and only a very tiny tiny amount. About 45 minutes ago. |

one of my dogs chowed down on a hershey bar once. I called somebody, vet or poison control, I dont' remember. They told me if it was milk chocolate, it would probably just give him the runs or make him throw up. It is the dark chocolate you have to be really worried about. My dog did nothing, he was not sick in any way. But, we now know to keep our candy bars up high. My new dumb little doggie gets up on his hind legs to look at things. I came home from a movie and there were wrapped pieces of candy on the floor. He took them off the coffee table. I never found any wrappings, so I don't think they ate any. So, now, nothing goes on the edges of tables that he can reach. It's just one thing after another. |
Thanks heavens it was milk chocolate. Here is the breakdown on toxicity: * White chocolate: 200 ounces per pound of body weight. It takes 250 pounds of white chocolate to cause signs of poisoning in a 20-pound dog, 125 pounds for a 10-pound dog. * Milk chocolate: 1 ounce per pound of body weight. Approximately one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 20-pound dog; one-half pound for a 10-pound dog. The average chocolate bar contains 2 to 3 ounces of milk chocolate. It would take 2-3 candy bars to poison a 10 pound dog. Semi-sweet chocolate has a similar toxic level. * Sweet cocoa: 0.3 ounces per pound of body weight. One-third of a pound of sweet cocoa is toxic to a 20-pound dog; 1/6 pound for a 10-pound dog. * Baking chocolate: 0.1 ounce per pound body weight. Jasmine so far is doing fine. I think the amount she consumed was so very small that she will be alright. I am so glad that we found the source and took care of it. We have never kept chocolate down. My DH and I are not a big lover of chocolate and I never ever thought of checking their room for it. We have completely checked their room now though. Thanks everyone for your input and all your support. I sure tell you all after going through that terrible scare with Jasmine Friday (which almost turned my dyed hair gray) and then finding her in chocolate today is a little more this old broad can handle. |
LadyMom that is very good information for everyone and it makes me feel a whole lot better right now. Jasmine is laying right beside me and like I said doing well. Thank the Lord! |
